Integrating Quotations A key step in writing a good body paragraph The IQC Model Many of you did quite well on selecting, editing, inserting, and citing quotations!

Here are some good examples of the quotation sentence: If Crooks wants to play cards with the other ranch hands, “[he] can’t play because [he’s] black” (Steinbeck 67). Candy cannot work very well because he “ain’t much good with on’y one hand” (Steinbeck 58). Carlson promises that the dog “wouldn’t even quiver” (Steinbeck 45). The “good heart of [Arthur Radley]” proves to Scout that good comes in unexpected packages (Lee 365).

Here are some poor examples of quotation integration: Because no one ever sees Boo, the people of Maycomb piece together a description of him from the few details they have “Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging by his tracks” (Lee 13). George, Lennie’s caretaker, feels obligated to take care of Lennie “I told his old lady I’d take care of him” (Steinbeck 22) BOTH OF THESE ARE RUN ON SENTENCES. Rethink how you edit your quotation sentence. Follow the steps on the following slides.

Select a significant quotation that proves your point. “`Your father’s right,’ she said. `Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. Follow these four steps when working with the quotation. 1. Isolate key words. “`Your father’s right,’ she said. `Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird’” (Lee 90). 2. Write your own sentence. Atticus understands that certain creatures bring only joy to others; therefore, hunters should not shoot them. 3. Add some of the key words to your sentence using quotation marks. Atticus understands that certain creatures bring only joy to others; therefore, “it’s a sin [for hunters] to kill a mockingbird.” 4. Add a citation (Author X). Atticus understands that certain creatures bring only joy to others; therefore, “it’s a sin [for hunters] to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 90).

Add commentary, being careful not merely to paraphrase the quotation. The final IQC is one part of a good body paragraph. Miss Maudie explains Atticus’s words to his children. Atticus understands that certain creatures bring only joy to others; therefore, “it’s a sin [for hunters] to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 90). Readers sense that Atticus and Miss Maudie are really talking about the need for the strong to protect the helpless in their community.

Reminders: Keep fictive fact in present tense. Don’t give away too much analysis or commentary in your introduction of the quotation. Don’t create a “lone ranger”—a long quotation standing alone; pick only key words.
