Learning from Local Initiatives NHs Dumfries and Galloway Asking Ourselves Questions in the Context of Health and Social Care Integration? Ewan Kelly

N – whose needs are being met by our current provision/education A – what does this say about our abilities, capability, capacity V- whose voice is being heard, not heard V – what is being valued, undervalued, undervalued Y – what does such reflection say about you, me, us (as a group, organisation, collaboration)

D and G Board Area Bereavement Care Group – January 2015 Meeting What? Why ? Goal/Aim? Who? How?

Big Picture yet Local Issues? Cultural change – death part of life and death/dying part of the core business in acute, primary and social care. Demedicalisation/normalisation of grief Integrating bereavement care into daily practice Education/formation (staff self awareness) Bereavement and loss affects everyone – staff included Bereavement is anticipatory for patient and loved ones and is never resolved after death – impacts on wellbeing – Loneliness and isolation Co-ordination across health and social care – including working with and learning from third sector Aligning/integrating bereavement care with other key workstreams/issues

First Actions? Involve the experts – the bereaved themselves Scoping and sharing what is already in place - especially in third sector eg carer groups, faith communities Build relationships and communicate
