Leonardo Da Vinci

The painting was created for the prince Ludovico Sforza of Milan. It took da Vinci 3 years to paint the mural. He used the not typical technique which turned out to be transitory - in spite of many renovations the mural is still in bad condition (in May 1999 a great conservation of the painting was finished under sb's management with Pinin Brambilli Barcilon); conservation works lasted five times longer than the time it took da Vinci to create it.

According to Giovanni Maria Pala, the Italian musician and the computer specialist, there is a brief requiem mass musical notation hidden in the painting.

The fresco presents the moment when Jesus Christ is announcing that one of the apostles will betray him (Judas is fourth from the left).

The naturalism of the image as well as the very representation of the scene is full of dynamism and unparalleled emotions; it was almost the revolution when the fresco was created. Apostles are grouped together but each of them reacts differently to the words of the Jesus

In a picture it is possible to notice the hand keeping the knife, right behind the third Apostle in the group of pupils sitting on the right-hand side of Jesus. Taking into consideration the poor condition of this superb work of art for some time specialists thought that this hand, if to count all the hands presented in a picture, is excess and belongs to nobody. However, nowadays it is much easier to notice that the hand holding a knife belongs to a St. Peter and the number of hand visible in the fresco is correct.
