The Disciples Remember (v. 16)c. The Disciples Remember (v. 16) d. The People Testify (vv )  Read Jn 12:17-18.

 Two crowds are depicted in these verses. ~ They would not be suppressed, and bore witness to what they had seen, thus magnifying the witness borne by the sign itself and serving as models for all who bear witness to the truth. ~ It was such an unheard of and wonderful deed that they just had to tell it again and again.

~ The word “testify” means to be a witness, to bear witness, i.e. to affirm or to testify to the truth of what one has seen, heard, or experienced.  Read Jn 12:18. ~ This statement emphasizes the superficial enthusiasm that possessed most of the cheering throng. ~ Devotion based only on curiosity or popularity fades quickly ~ Devotion based only on curiosity or popularity fades quickly.

e. The Pharisees Complain (v. 19)  Read Jn 12:19. ~ The Pharisees are frantic!  The religious leaders were becoming desperate men. ~ Desperation leads to exaggeration.  Those who oppose Christ exert a hopeless effort. ~ People who have set out to discredit Him have ended up bowing before Him in worship.

~ They were only succeeding as far as their plan coincided with God’s plan. ~ PEOPLE CAN SPEND A LIFETIME RESISTING AND REJECTING CHRIST, ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING BUT THEIR OWN DESTRUCTION.

 This is another of John’s ironies as well. ~ By “the world,” the Pharisees mean “everyone”, i.e. everyone in the Jerusalem area, etc. ~ But “the world” commonly refers, in John’s Gospel, to people everywhere without racial distinction but who are lost and in rebellion against God. ~ In truth the aim of Jesus’ mission was to save the world (Jn 3:17).
