ECE 2317 Applied Electricity and Magnetism Prof. David R. Jackson Dept. of ECE Fall 2014 Notes 1 Notes prepared by the EM Group University of Houston 1

Important Things  Please read the syllabus carefully! You are responsible for everything on it!  Please read the UH Academic Honesty Policy in the online version of the Student handbook (the website is in the syllabus).  Fill out the Academic Honesty and Syllabus form, sign it, and return it by the deadline indicated (Sept. 10, 2014) or else you may be dropped. 2

Class Website Please check the “Important Announcements” section of the class website often. You are responsible for everything that is there. 3

Note on Attendance Class attendance is required:  Class attendance may be taken randomly  Pop quizzes may be given. These are more likely to happen if attendance starts to drop. If you have three unexcused absences, you may be dropped at any time (even at the end of the semester) or fail the course. To have an absence excused, you must get permission from the instructor before class begins. 4

Prerequisite Letter If you get a letter, the ECE department thinks you are missing one or more course requirements. ECE 1331 (Computers and Problem Solving) Math 2433: (Calculus III) Physics 1322 (University Physics II) Chemistry 1372 (Chemistry for Engineers) Chemistry 1117 (Chemistry Lab) Prerequisites: Math 3321 (Engineering Math) Credit for or Registration in (CFORI): 5

Prerequisite Letter (cont.) If you get a letter you must respond to it and return it to the Department front office (N308-D) by the deadline indicated on the form or you will be dropped. Any questions about the form…please see Prof. Markenscoff in room N320-D. 6

What is this Course About? Introduction to Electromagnetism (electric and magnetic fields)  In this course we mainly study STATICS (zero, or low frequency)  In EM course ECE 3317, you study dynamics. 7

Class Notes 8 The class notes will be placed on the class Blackboard website (both pptx and pdf versions). If you have trouble reading the equations in the pptx version, you are most likely having a font problem due to missing MathType fonts.  Use the pdf version  Download the free MathType fonts: (  Download MathType (30 day free trial). After 30 days, it reverts to MathType Lite, which has all of the fonts and is still better than Equation Editor (which comes with Microsoft Office).

ECE 2317 Workshop The ECE 2317 workshop is a great way to get some extra help, in a collaborative and friendly learning environment. 9  The workshop is run by Krishna Kota (Ph.D. Student in the ECE department).  The workshop meets M, W from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. in E320-D3.

ECE 2317 Workshop (cont.) Enrolling in the workshop: 10  Students must register for the workshop if they wish to take it. The workshop is a 1 credit hour pass/fail course.  If you wish to register, please show up at the first meeting, on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 10:00 a.m., in room E320-D3. Mr. Matthews will be there to sign you up at the first
