The Basics Based on Double Wing Principles Uses a non-symmetrical backfield. Does not use the classic quick motion. Uses an off set BB. Uses a deep “I” set TB for a more vertical attack. Uses SAB blocking but GOD blocking can be used. Uses the same power running principles of the DW. Down/Double and Kick Out. Doesn’t use the traditional balanced double tight formation but a more “traditional look”. The preflow look of the quick motion is replaced by the offset BB, WB, and vertical set up of the TB. This gives the preflow indication of strength and play flow. offset BB gives the BB a much easier blocking track. The ability to adjust depth gives us the ability to allow our best blocker to adapt to his blocking path and running game. The backside trap game is easier to execute (ala Markham) but we lose the playside BB trap game. The deep set TB gives us a much more vertical and quicker attack to the LOS. It isolates the runner’s path. It reduces the chance of a chase down and forces the BSDE to chase deep if he crashes opening the inside trap and counter game. I prefer SAB but GOD can be used very easily.

Play Calling Use a word association system. FORMATION – BALL CARRIER – BLOCKING – SIDE Bear – BB Trap - Left BLOCKING TAGS are added either in front of the blocking call or at the end. QB Tags are added at the end. Pass Tags are added at the end.

Basic Formations BEAR

Basic Formations BULL

Basic Formations BISON

Formation Adjustments Over – tells the WSOT to move in between the SSTE and SST. OVER BULL Under – tells the SSOT to move in between the WSTE and WST. Split – Puts two Split Ends 8 to 10 yards wide in place of the Tight Ends. Wide – Tells the WB to split out 8 to 10 yards.

The Magic Five Super Seal BB Trap Lead WB Kick Side XX BB Wedge

Super Seal The base play in the power series. Must be able to run this play anywhere on the field at any time. Must be able to adapt this play to what the defense shows you. This is the base for our play action pass.

Super Seal

Super Seal Blocking Adjustments Long Short Double Bounce Sweep

Super Long Seal Used against a tough 6 or 9 tech DE that is inside of the WB. DE is slow playing or giving the BB a problem on the kick out. Need to extend the play by one gap. WB makes a “COMBO” call automatically.

Super Long Seal

Super Short Seal Used against a tough PSLB that needs to be doubled. PSLB that is crashing on the outside hip of the PSTE. Need to compress the play by one gap. PSTE cannot have a inside threat to gap or man on.

Super Short Seal

Super Seal – Double Used against a tough DE (EMLOS) that the BB can kick out but is not moving. Superior talent or ability. Is a double kick out. Lose fast block on the FORCE (CB). BSG can take the FORCE (CB) Good to use against teams that sit the CB on the LOS outside of the DE.

Super Seal - Double

Super Seal - Bounce Log block by BB. Used against a DE (EMLOS) that is pinching or sliding down the LOS or slow playing and squatting on the LOS (reading). BB aligns behind the BST and one yard deep to get additional depth and put him closer to the outside shoulder. QB and BSG/BST pull under the LOG.

Super Seal - Bounce

Super Seal - Sweep Used against a defense that have compressed in on the offense giving us the edge. Has the WB reach block on the EMLOS. Has the BB log next man outside. All pullers go under the reach and log.

Super Seal - Sweep

Super Seal Ball Carrier Adjustments Keep – QB keep off of Super Seal action. Fumble – QB keep off of TB faking a fumble in the back field.

Super Seal - Keep

Super Seal - Fumble

BB Trap Backside trap play to BB. Called counter trap by some. Used when the play side and inside linebackers are flowing to the super seal. Used when an interior defensive lineman is charging hard up field to penetrate. Uses two pulling linemen for additional power.

BB Trap

BB Trap Blocking Adjustments Short Trap Kick

BB Short Trap Used against a tough PSLB. Moves one gap inside.

BB Short Trap

BB Kick Used when PSLB is flowing hard to backside to play the Super Seal. Used against a tough 4 or 5 tech that is reading. Used to trap the EMLOS.

BB Kick

BB Trap Ball Carrier Adjustments Keep – QB keeps ball off of BB Trap action. Fumble – QB keeps ball off of BB Trap and TB fumble action.

BB Trap - Keep

BB Trap - Fumble

Lead WB Kick Used when the PSLB is flowing to the back side to play the super seal. Kick out EMLOS (DE). BSG kicks out, BST seals inside. BB jab steps to backside and then gets hip to hip with BST and leads into hole blocking outside in (FORCE). WB hits the first daylight he sees.

Lead WB Kick

Lead WB Trap Backside trap play to WB. Moves play one gap inside. Used when the PSLB is not flowing hard enough to the super seal. Used when an interior defensive lineman is charging hard up field to penetrate. Uses two pulling linemen and a lead blocker for additional power. Can use the PSTE and BST to double seal a tough LB.

Lead WB Trap

Lead WB Short Trap Used against a tough PSLB with a double team or a triple team (BST). Moves one gap inside.

Lead WB Short Trap

Lead WB Kick Ball Carrier Adjustments Keep – QB keeps ball off of counter action Fumble – QB keeps ball off of counter action and TB fumble action. Reverse – QB makes outside handoff and BSG lets a pinching DE go and kicks out the FORCE (corner).

Lead WB Kick - Keep

Lead WB Kick - Fumble

Lead WB Kick - Reverse

Side TB Cutback play. Works well against teams that are keying the TB and/or overloading to strong side. BB leads into hole. PSTE hinges and seals off inside. PST hinges but if a threat is present on his inside he SAB blocks. No pulling linemen to key off of.

Side

Side Ball Carrier Adjustments Keep – QB keeps ball off of side action.

Side - Keep

XX BB Wedge Great play to use against reading defenses. Defenses that are stacking up on both perimeters leaving the middle of the defense soft. XX = WB Counter backfield action.

XX BB Wedge

XX BB Wedge Ball Carrier Adjustment Keep – QB keeps ball off of wedge action. Reverse – QB makes outside handoff of to WB to the other side.

XX BB Wedge - Keep

XX BB Wedge - Reverse

Passing Game Use a modified slide protection. If mimicking a run scheme pullers still pull but seal off the LOS/kick out. Play side line rule: slide to QB bootleg, half kick any threat outside/over, half slide with no threat outside/over. QB boots for depth until he crosses the WB’s starting point.

Three Basic Slide Pro Schemes Seal Slide Trap Slide Slide (for passing series)

Play Action Pass Forces the defense to play run first. Added misdirection forces defenders to read assignments and then play pass. Gives the passer more time to find the receiver as the defense must slow to play run. No ALL OUT BLITZ ON PASSER.

Power Series Passing WB PASS is the primary pass. Corner route – adjust depth for age. 6 yards for younger, 10 yards for intermediate, 15 yards for high school. Single route with max protection and run action. Additional tags add a receiver. BB FLAT PASS THROWBACK PASS TE DELAY PASS TE DRAG PASS TB FLAT PASS

Important Factors for Successful Passing QB bootleg QB must gain depth until he crosses the WB’s starting point. (5 to 7 yards of depth). Once he crosses the WB’s start point he must attack the LOS so that the hips point up field. As soon as the TB crosses his face he has a GREENLIGHT to throw the ball. Ball is up and he is looking up field. If he feels pressure he tucks the ball and runs. If he has a LOW read and feels pressure that route is HOT

Super Seal – BB Flat Pass
