Former Port of Seville Seville’s most traditional and emblematic district, bordering Santa Cruz and the Guadalquivir Rivir. The name “El Arenal” comes from the sandy nature that this east bank of a river once had. One of the largest and most important ports during the 16 th and 17 th century River silting gradually forced the city to relocate the port.

Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza Seville’s Bullring (the oldest and second most important one in Spain) Site of the annual Feria de Abril (one of the most well- known bullfighting festivals in the world) The sculptures were done by Cayetano de Acosta, a Portuguese.

Hospital de la Santa Caridad Hospital of Charity, founded in 1645 by Miguel de Mañara to bury paupers and criminals in the 17 th century. Now it shelters the homeless. In addition to its Altar Piece, it is an architectural and artistic summit of Spanish baroque art. Contains the best works of Murillo, Valdes Leal, Pineda, and others.

La Hermandad de la Santa Caridad The Hospital of Charity is home to the Brotherhood of the Holy Charity, founded in Don Miguel de Mañara y Vicentelo de Leca, who built the hospital, dedicated himself to working for the brotherhood after the death of his wife. Mañara’s figure is believed to have inspired Tirso de Molina’s most famous creation Don Juan in his play “El Burlador de Seville.” Don Juan, the “seducer of Seville” inspired many plays and operas, such as some of Mozart.

Torre del Oro Constructed in the 13 th century by the Berbers during the Almohad dynasty. Served as a military watchtower, a prison, and as a vault for precious metals (hence the origin of its name).

Reales Atarazanas The Royal Shipyards were built as the warehouses of the old port of Santo Domingo. Served as the first customs and tax house of the New World. Are the oldest and sole building of its type still standing, and today house the Museo de las Atarazanas.

El Barrio Torero por Excelencia During the 15 th century, a major clothing market was developed for sailors, called the Marketplace (el Baratillo). This flea market gave rise to the rise of a suburb, buildings of great poise, and rich temples of brotherhoods. There is also a Chapel of the Marketplace, home to the popular Sisterhood of the Pieta. Its location unites the love for bull fights, religious devotion, and brotherhoods, and it makes the streets of El Arenal full of art and life, making Seville a tourist economy neighborhood.
