Draft Report on University-Wide Breadth Requirements by The University Senate Ad Hoc Committee December 1, 2008

Membership of the Ad Hoc Committee Avron Abraham –UST and Gen Ed (Chair) Brian Ackerman – A&S Eric Rise – A&S Tony Seraphin – A&S Lynn Worden – CHEP Steve Hastings – CANR Doug Buttrey – ENGR Carolyn Manning – HS Jennifer Gregan-Paxton – B&E John Madsen – CMES and UGS

Charge to the Committee to examine the current challenges, opportunities and make recommendations for the development and implementation of breadth requirements at the University of Delaware compile student, faculty, and college feedback on the issues. provide recommendations that include a specific plan for implementation and that support the University’s strategic plan.

Why University-Wide Breadth Requirements? Current lack of uniformity across colleges/departments with not only different requirements but different categories and definitions. Would allow for greater flexibility and ease of movement between majors

Proposed University-Wide Breadth Requirements Consisting of 12 credits with at least one course from each category: - Creative Arts and Humanities - History and Cultural Change - Social and Behavioral Sciences - Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology Note: These categories are aligned with the College of Arts & Sciences revised breadth requirements that are currently under review by UGS

Would include courses from all Colleges with reciprocity Must be courses taken from outside the student’s home department/program Do not include ENGL110 Require a minimum grade requirement of C- (this is under discussion) Can be counted towards satisfying other requirements (e.g. multicultural, DLE, minor, major) Breadth courses would be required to be open to all students Additional breadth requirements could be designated by program, department or college Proposed University-Wide Breadth Requirements:

Oversight and Administration of University-Wide Breadth Requirements A standing faculty committee: (Coordinated by UGS) - Will not approve courses - Will review placement within categories - Ensure availability of courses College responsibility - Approval of courses from within college to be submitted as satisfying breadth requirements - Setting credit and/or grade requirements over and above the minimum university requirement of 12 credits. - Evaluating substitutions and waivers
