OCR’s Practical Endorsement

Can be completed: using OCR-published practical resources OR Using Centre’s own practical activities (checked by OCR). Students keep records (lab book / portfolio) of their assessed practical work which may be inspected during visiting monitoring. OCR online Task Tracker Guidance cannot be finalised until Ofqual have responded to the results of the Practical Endorsement trialling carried out in a number of centres across the country in Autumn IT IS A TRIAL ACROSS ALL AWARDING BODIES.

Changes to exam structure What % assesses practical skills? Minimum of 15% (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) What % assesses mathematical content? Minimum of 10% (Biology), 20% (Chemistry), 40% (Physics) Why multiple choice? A chance to assess a larger range of content Why extended response ? Not essays, not focused on QWC of specific terminology, more about ‘logical, coherent, sustained responses’. Some will be marked using Level of Response mark schemes. Have been used in ALL GCSE Science papers since 2011.

Changes to Exam structure For all OCR Science AS levels (A & B) AS level (140 marks, 3 h) Paper 1 ‘Breadth’ 1 h marks Paper 2 ‘Depth’ 1 h marks Section A (20 marks) Multiple choice questions Section B (50 marks) Structured questions covering theory and practical skills Structured questions covering theory and practical skills Two papers, 50/50 weighting All content assessable in both papers Extended response in Paper 2 only Practical assessed within the question papers, LOs embedded within the specification Min. 15% practical weighting Min. 10% maths weighting (Biology) 20% maths weighting (Chemistry) 40% maths weighting (Physics) Common assessment model for ALL AS qualifications.
