The Leeds Curriculum Slides for Open Days

The Leeds Curriculum What can you expect from a Leeds degree? Exposure to research from day one: teaching informed by research excellence acquisition of research skills practice in applying research skills and reflecting on the benefit Opportunity to design and direct independent research in final year Courses which reflect the importance of employability, global and cultural insight and ethics and responsibility in relation to the discipline [schools to provide egs from AHCs] A broad education which will challenge you to think about things in different ways and from different perspectives

The Leeds Curriculum What does a broader education provide? A chance for you to explore the diversity of learning opportunities which a university the size of Leeds has to offer Space for you to extend your personal and professional skills in ways relevant to your future career: including languages/IT/communication/enterprise A stimulus to intellectual breadth, flexibility, confidence – competencies employers tell us they want A fresh perspective on your main subject, locating it in a wider academic and/or vocational context

The Leeds Curriculum How will you be able to broaden? Through your main disciplinary studies – programmes include: modules which explore the relevance and application of your degree subjects in different contexts: academic and vocational modules that introduce you to alternative perspectives on the ideas and issues you are studying And – in most programmes – through your own choice of modules from the ten Discovery Themes

Discovery Themes Creating sustainable futures Enterprise and innovation Ethics, religion and law Exploring the sciences Languages and cross-cultural understanding Media, culture and creativity Mind and body Personal and professional development Power and conflict Technology and its impacts

The Leeds Curriculum Discovery Themes: Bring together modules from across the University to illuminate important ideas and issues. Allow you to access inspirational modules taught by world- class experts. Offer you real breadth of choice and the opportunity to pursue your own personal interests. Are organised in a structured way to help you find the particular Discovery Modules that are right for you. Allow you to pursue an interest in depth over two or more levels, or provide a taste of a new subject at a single level. Provide flexibility to allow personalised progression paths.

The Leeds Curriculum What will mark you out as a Leeds Graduate? You will develop transferable academic skills/capabilities: Question setting/problem solving Engaging with ideas Acquiring/analysing information Challenging received wisdom Understanding/reinforcing the creation of knowledge You will understand the connections between academic study and the wider world You will build the foundations for life/career after university
