Presentation transcript:

Partnering Presented at JUSTSAP/PISCES 2008 Collaboration with Colorado School of Mines

Center for Space Resources The Center for Space Resources (CSR) pursues the study and utilization of space and planetary resources by developing technologies for drilling, excavation and extraction, materials processing and manufacturing, and spacecraft and habitat life-support systems. Vision

CSR Lunar and Martian regolith properties Planetary soil drilling and excavation Extraction and processing of volatile and solid planetary material In-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technologies Manufacturing techniques with planetary materials Lunar and planetary dust characterization, management, and mitigation techniques Sensors for trace-species and biogenic gas detection on the Moon and Mars Life support systems on spacecraft and planetary habitats, including fire suppression, environmental monitoring and control, water processing, and energy generation from waste and fuel cells Advanced materials for in-space repairs and thermal protection Technical and economic analyses for identifying potential commercial developments in space and planets Expertise

The Partnership CSM and UHH are both small institutions not widely known in space exploration circles. CSM, through CSR, has unique capabilities in ISRU, Engineering, Mining and Materials Science. UHH, through PISCES, has unique facilities for lunar simulation and capabilities in physics, geology, agriculture and Hawaiian cultures, and high visibility within NASA as a ground analog site. The technologies needed for a sustainable lunar outpost span the breadth of those needed on Earth. No single university can do it all (neither can NASA) Why We Need Each Other

The Partnership Reciprocal Use Of Facilities, Including Analytical Equipment and Field Test Sites Reciprocal Participation in Education Programs Via Distance-learning Technology Joint Proposals to NASA and Other Space Agencies Around the World Joint Proposals in Partnership with Companies Doing Business with Both Centers Joint Conferences Highlighting Activities at Both Centers Shared Publicity Stressing Capabilities of Both Centers Student And Faculty Exchanges for Research and Education Between the Two Centers What We Can Do Together

An Example Pillars of Sustainability: Consumables – University of Hawai`i at Hilo College of Agriculture Energy – University of Houston Materials – Colorado School of Mines NASA Lunar Science Institute Proposal

Summary Mutual Need Complementary Strengths and Capabilities Existing Opportunities Personal Connections The Partnership is Greater than the Sum of the Partners CSM/UHH is a Trailblazer Partnership
