Tar Creek, Superfund Site, Chat – Flint Aggregates Tri- State Mining District (Lead- Zinc) (Mid 1800s to 1970) Chat mining waste- Dry process- Wet Process (Chat- Tailing- sand/ silt) EPA- recommends the use of chat for transportation (Encapsulate) Un-encapsulated use have some potential to cause damage to human health or the environment 9
EPA has determined the following uses of chat in transportation construction- Not likely to present threat to human and environment. HMA, WMA cold mix asphalt road surface, road base, different seals coats, epoxy bridge and antiskid surfacing.
