Torch

Solid Object

Turning torch on

Light rays from torch

Light rays from torch absorbed and reflected by wall.

It is the reflected light that allows us to see the wall

Light rays from torch absorbed or reflected by object

It is this diffused reflection of the light that allows us to see the wall and object. These reflected rays also allow us to see the back of the object and the wall without direct torch light

No direct light from torch

Shadow of object on wall.

The shadow is higher than the object.

This is due to the angle formed by the light rays hitting and missing the object

We can change the height of the shadow by moving the object and the torch.
