About our Trip… On June 6 th 1944 the United States, British and Canadian forces launched Operation Overlord. The invasion took place across the English Channel at the beaches of Normandy, France which consisted of two phases, an airborne assault the night before and the largest amphibious invasion beginning at 6:30 am. The coast was divided into 5 separate landing sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The goal of the operation was for Allied Forces to establish a foothold onto Europe to combat the Nazi power. Lets explore the Allies plan for invasion and discover what conditions soldiers endured when landing on the beaches. VFT Menu

Label the five beaches involved in the Normandy Invasions and describe which Allied nation invaded each beach. Describe the conditions the Allied soldiers endured while invading the beaches and what was the goal for each beach. Explain which beach was met with the strongest amount of Nazi resistance. Explain the goals of Operation Overlord. Describe the success of Operation Overlord and label several factors that secured an Allied victory. VFT Menu

Airborne Assault: Light infantry moved by aircraft and dropped into battle. Amphibious Invasion: Use of naval firepower, logistics and strategy to project military power ashore. Landing craft: Boats and seagoing vessels used to convey a landing force from the sea to the shore during an amphibious assault English Channel: An arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates Great Britain from northern France, and joins the North Sea to the Atlantic. Operation Overlord: The code name for the Battle of Normandy, the operation that launched the invasion of German-occupied western Europe during World War II by Allied forces. Infantry division: a large military unit or formation usually consisting of between 10,000 and 30,000 soldiers General Dwight D. Eisenhower: Allied commander of the United State military in the European theatre. VFT Menu

Utah Beach was added towards the end of the invasion plan. The US 4 th Infantry Division landed on the beach and was met with little resistance because of US paratroopers dropped the night before and began fighting inland. Most causalities on this beach was from the airborne divisions prior to the amphibious invasion. Utah Beach Web Links Wikipedia U.S. Army: D-Day Military History Online Dday-Overlord

VFT Menu Omaha Beach was the most heavily fortified German position in Normandy. Terrible ocean conditions altered the path of most landing craft and resulted in many Allied forces missing their correct position. Causalities for the invading Allies of the 1 st Infantry Division and the 29 th Infantry Division were high. After hours of intense combat, American Forces were able to push through and maintain two footholds onto the beach. Gold Beach was invaded by 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division of the United Kingdom. The primary goal was to establish a beachhead between Arromanches and Ver-sur-Mer which would provided artillery support for Allied troops. British troops met little resistance and were successful in establishing a foothold onto the beach. VFT Menu Gold Beach Web Links Wikipedia U.S. Army: D-Day Military History Online Dday-Overlord

Juno Beach, also known as the Canadian beach, as it was assigned to the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Although assigned to Canadian forces, British special forces along with armor supported in the invasion. Juno was the second most heavily defended of the five landing sites chosen. Canadian forces would eventually link up with the British forces that had landed at Sword Beach. Juno Beach Web Links Wikipedia U.S. Army: D-Day Military History Online Dday-Overlord VFT Menu

Sword Beach was assaulted by the British 3 rd Infantry and is around 15 km from Caen, the ultimate goal of the 3rd Infantry Division. The initial landing was met with little resistance but major German defenses were located behind the beach head and a counterattack from German armor halted progress inland.
