‘ Someone somewhere has found a solution’ The PACE project was started to help organisations in one part of Africa get the benefits from the ideas and experiences of people working in other parts. By sharing ideas we don’t have to start from zero, we can learn from other people’s experiences and share our own findings with them, so everyone benefits.

Making Water Safe to Drink L.O. Water is essential for life and must be safe...

Which cup of water would you drink? Click on your choice... AB C

You chose glass A! BAD LUCK! It might have LOOKED clear and clean, but there are lots of microscopic, INVISIBLE water borne diseases. Like Typhoid, which you now have. So, what will happen to you? Week 1: A rising temperature. Headache. Cough. Bleeding nose. Week 2: Flat on your back. High temperature. Delirium. Diorrhoea. Week 3: Same as week 2, PLUS Internal Bleeding and Abscesses. Week 4: More of the same... With TREATMENT you will probably live. You need antibiotics. And to be rehydrated. Without treatment, 30% of people with Typhoid die. Try Again?

You chose glass B! BAD LUCK! It wasn’t even the dirty look of the water that was dangerous. It was the microscopic, INVISIBLE water borne diseases that were bad for you. Like Cholera, which you now have. So, what will happen to you? The bacteria produces a toxin that attacks your stomach lining. This will give you horrendous diarrhoea. This will make you extremely dehydrated and your blood pressure will drop to dangerously low levels. If you are not treated, you could die within 3 hours. You need Oral Rehydration Therapy and Antibiotics to help you live. Try Again?

You chose glass C! YAY! Lucky you, the glass you chose was clean, safe drinking water. So, what will happen to you? You will NOT get diarrhoea from this cup (unlike the 6000 children who die EVERY DAY because of it). You will NOT be at risk from waterborne diseases (unlike the 1.8 MILLION people who die from these diseases EVERY YEAR). You are NOT joining the 1.1 BILLION people who do not have the choice of safe drinking water. You WILL probably complain that it is only water and not Coke!!

Why is Lisha a happy girl now? 1.Read the statements and look at the images very carefully. 2.Decide on groups to put them in. 3.Discuss your answer to the question ‘Why is Lisha a happy girl now?’

The energy used to supply water to your home in a year could boil enough water to make 12,000 cups of tea Did you know? About a quarter of all clean drinkable water we use in our homes is flushed down the toilet! A dripping tap can waste almost enough water in a day to fill a bath
