Working together to make Colorado a better place for teachers to teach and children to learn!

Building and Keeping the Right Team

Fact or Fiction? Salary - is the key factor in recruiting and retaining the best teachers. Building and Keeping the Right Team

Do we need to pay more than traditional public schools to get and keep good teachers? Building and Keeping the Right Team

Not necessarily! Building and Keeping the Right Team

According to Inc. Magazine your employees want: 1.Identifiable Purpose 2.Attainable Goals 3.Clearly-defined Responsibilities 4.Autonomy 5.Flexibility 6.Attention 7.Opportunities to innovate 8.Open-mindedness 9.Transparency 10. Compensation (Issie Lapowsky, Aug 2010) Building and Keeping the Right Team

“The surprising truth about what motivates us” Building and Keeping the Right Team FjJc

Building and Keeping the Right Team An entirely new stream of research is contradicting our previous conceptions about what motivates employees.

Building and Keeping the Right Team Bonuses or monetary rewards will help get more out of our employees. RIGHT?

Building and Keeping the Right Team A study conducted at M.I.T. shows…. Bonuses and monetary rewards work well… As long as a task involves only mechanical skills. But once a task calls for exceptional cognitive skills, monetary rewards don’t work as well. How can this be?

Building and Keeping the Right Team This might seem to defy the laws of behavioral physics! Everyone knows if you don’t pay people enough they will not be motivated to do a good job. How much is enough?

Building and Keeping the Right Team The best use of money as a motivator is to take the issue of money off the negotiating table. Pay people enough so that they are not always thinking about money and then they can concentrate on the job. Once you do that there are 3 key factors that lead to better performance:

Building and Keeping the Right Team 1.Autonomy 2.Mastery 3.Purpose

Building and Keeping the Right Team Autonomy: Our desire to be self directed. Teachers do not perform at their best under a microscope (micromanagement). Micromanagement is great if you want compliance. But if you want engagement, self direction is better.

Building and Keeping the Right Team Mastery: Our urge to get better at what we like to do. If a teacher on your staff is not constantly pestering you about providing more professional development … might be time to upgrade!

Building and Keeping the Right Team Purpose: Our deepest desire to do something that is transcendent… bigger than us! This hits right at the heart of a teacher! The best employer will find ways to create a workplace environment that frees up a teacher to be able to just teach! This is their calling…their purpose fulfilled.

Building and Keeping the Right Team On – boarding!

Building and Keeping the Right Team Are we effective at “on-boarding” employees? Do we have a positive work environment? Do we follow good hiring practices? Do we have good firing practices?

Building and Keeping the Right Team Remember… We operate under an “at will” contract system. Not an “at whim” system.

Do we have reasonable policies in place, and are they followed consistently? Are we consistent with pay raises, assignments, and promotions? Building and Keeping the Right Team

In Real Estate the three most important factors for selling a property are… Location!

Building and Keeping the Right Team In the Charter School business the three most important factors to ensure success are… Reputation!

Building and Keeping the Right Team On page 4 of Leveling the Playing Field point program to aid administrators in fostering positive labor relations

Building and Keeping the Right Team One of the most important but least utilized is to… Consistently remind employees about your vision and mission! Reinforce their belief that they are doing meaningful and important work.

The biggest reason that teachers join unions? A voice - to make management listen to their concerns. Building and Keeping the Right Team

Listen to us!

3 3 simple rules to get the best out of your team: 1.Clear objectives “Tell me what my students need to know and be able to do.”

Listen to us! 3 3 simple rules to get the best out of your team: 2.Time and resources “Give me sufficient time and resources to do my job.”

Listen to us! 3 3 simple rules to get the best out of your team: 3.Run interference “Keep the red tape, distractions, endless reports, and interruptions at a minimum.”
