How do I know I need a new scene? There are number of reasons to have a new scene including:- change of location time introduce new characters new drama form/convention subject of the scene

Change of location Sc 1 The action of a drama starts in the kitchen of a house. If the action is to be moved to a classroom then you need a new set and a new scene. Therefore, the scenario reads: Sc1 Donna’s Kitchen Sc 2 Classroom

Passage of Time One minute challenge Write down 4 ways that passage of time can be indicated.

Passage of time Indicate that a number of hours, weeks, years have passed since the last scene. Information can be passed visually – set, props, costume. Be shared in dialogue – what the characters say. Use of music, sound effects. Can be shown by using flashbacks/flash forwards.

Introduce new characters Sometimes it is better to create a whole new scene if new characters are involved. It can add interest to the drama and solve problems, change how a character behaves. E.g. a teenager will most likely behave differently in a friend’s house to their own.

Tension A change of scene can help add to the pace and tension of a drama. An audience can loose interest if a scene is long and not very interesting. Slick scene changes can help keep an audience focussed. Dramatic impact. If a scene has had a dramatic ending e.g. someone being shot, a quick ending to the scene can add to the impact.
