Presentation transcript:

Hello everyone – welcome to Online PD Please tell us a little about yourself in text chat – also tell us if you are new to Elluminate & would like a short “walk” through on some of the basic tools. Today’s session To what degree do you manage Twitter? Why should you manage Twitter? How can you manage Twitter? How can we damage limit when it happens?

Where are you coming from? How do you handle your Twitter follows? A – accept all follows & autofollow back B – checkout follows sometimes & follow most C – checkout follows when I get & follow any that look interesting never block D – check for new follows sometimes, follow if look interesting occasionally block/report spam E – check for new follows often, follow if meet my criteria, monitor/block/report spam if not

Where am I coming from? I manage my Twitter follows very actively.  Have clear ideas about what I seek in follows  Check for new follows often (daily/3-5 times per week)  Follow if meet my criteria  Monitor if unsure /block/report spam if not

What do you do? Strategies you use to manage followers/following?

Criteria I look at some or all of: Profile – does it tell me about them Avatar – photo or meaningful image Followers – type - proportion of educators Follower/Following numbers & ratio – more followers Background image – relevant or engaging My own prefs – no: marketers, self styled gurus, social media experts, minors, pple who follow zillions Recent Tweets – number, topics, style, type

Provocative avatar, tweets, profile, language Free giveaways promised Following many – few followers Get a zillion followers by … Repetitive tweets Zero or minimal tweets Self styled expert/guru Heavy marketing “feel” “Secret” information promised

What would you do? Sort out these potential follows: Follow Block &/or report Wait & monitor

Managing Managing is easier than it used to be: On Twitter web On Tweetdeck

Managing Application share: What should I do with this follower? A - Follow B - Wait and monitor C - Block D - Block and report spam

Hacking, spam, phishing Manage your Twitter stream & you will: Reduce your risk of being attacked! Reduce the risk of your followers being attacked through YOU!

If it happens? If you get an unusual DM: Tell the sender If your ac is hacked a DM can be sent in your name without your knowledge If someone tells you they have had an odd DM from YOU then you can:

1. From your Twitter ac choose Settings 3. Check who has access 2. Select the Connections tab 4. Revoke access for those you don’t trust 5. Change your password

Click on “Help” on your Twitter for the support page and or visit their blog for updates on major issues

The key to fighting hacking, spam & phishing Keep your own nest clean Warn your stream if you see probable attacks Tell others if you think they’ve been attacked Use Twitter’s report process If you just block anyone who sends an odd DM then the spammers will win Be kind! However careful you are it could be YOU next time!
