Presentation transcript:

According to the 2000 census, 32,800,000 people (about 12 percent of the total population of the United States) classified themselves as being of Spanish or Hispanic descent. Out of that number, 30,700,800 indicated that they were of either Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban descent. The remaining 2,099,200 people checked “Other Spanish/Hispanic” on their census questionnaires. This broad category included people who came from or who had ancestral ties to other Spanishspeaking countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America, or Spain.

More than half of Miami’s population is of Spanish-speaking descent. Calle Ocho is the heart of Little Havana, the largest Cuban American community in the United States. The Calle Ocho Festival, which takes place at the end of Carnaval Miami, is a great time to sample Cuban food and dance to some of the world’s greatest salsa artists.
