Things to Take Away from Beowulf

Beowulf’s Heroism Beowulf was the typical epic hero in that he: sacrificed himself for the greater good had super-human strength was quick to seek glory and fame was unnaturally courageous felt that fate guided his destiny Was a man of action not given to contemplate or procrastinate a decision

Wyrd Wikipedia: “Wyrd is a concept in Anglo-Saxon culture roughly corresponding to fate or personal destiny.” Beowulf, like those of his culture, trusted in fate and destiny, giving him courage to face insurmountable odds, knowing that he would defeat any foe if the fates willed it to happen.

Grendel Is given a Biblical origin as a descendent of Cain Stands in for any menacing fear of the period: be it threats to the church, disease, death, etc. Is completely foreign to the culture – an outsider who has nothing in common with decent society Is completely evil without redeeming qualities or remorse

Themes in Beowulf Strength, courage, and loyalty are valued characteristics It is important to uphold one’s good reputation No matter how good you are, fate can sometimes abandon you Death will come to the great, as well as the common folk The supernatural plays a role in everyday life
