1. Bouncing into the room, she lit up the area with a glow on her face as she told about her fiancé and their wedding plans. 2. She huddled in the corner, clutching her tattered blanket and shaking convulsively, as she feverishly searched the room for the unknown dangers that awaited her. 3. Bursting through the door, the flustered mother screamed uncontrollably at the unsuspecting teacher who had given her child an F. 4. He glanced behind him, for hear of his imagined pursuers, then hurriedly walked on, jumping at the slightest sound even of a leaf crackling under his own foot. 5. Gently smiling, the mother tucked the covers up around the child’s neck, and carefully, quietly, left the room making sure to leave a ray of light shining through the opened door should the child wake.

It was a cool and damp evening with an active breeze making its way in through the open window. The man scribbled furiously, unable to believe that he was actually this close to solving the puzzle. With one stroke of his pen he was finished. In the morning, he would mail the entry away, and there was little doubt that the grand prize would be his. Without a moment’s thought, he put down the paper and ran excitedly from the room while the wind continued its evening song.

Read “backwards” Specific hints an author gives the reader about what will happen later.

You make the guesses. The author INTENTIONALLY plants clues.

What did the makers of this movie foreshadow?

The Dark Knight “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Spider-Man 3 “They’re my best friends…I’d give my life for them.”

The idea that events are pre- determined and you have no control over them. The future is unknown, and you can control your outcomes.

Personal opinion Discuss the mood created in the story (at least one way the author creates it) Identify any foreshadowing that helps to hint at events to come in the story

FORESHADOWING Think back to the first few pages of the story. What clues are given that could lead a reader to guess the ending of the story? Write down three instances of foreshadowing on the back of your page.

A classic tale about three wishes and the role of fate in people’s lives. Identify the primary mood of the story and explain how the author creates it. Be sure to use evidence from the text to support your answer. Analyze the author’s use of foreshadowing by citing and explaining specific examples from the text. 4-6 sentence response for each!!!
