What is Community Based Education? Community Based Education (CBE) is any type of learning that involves the community including traditional Service Learning projects, tours of the community or businesses, interviews of external stakeholders and more. By expanding Service Learning to CBE, the office is able to provide support to a larger scope of classroom initiatives that engage the community.

External Project Development Process Application Community Based Education Project Application is filled out by the host organization. CBE Review CBE staff review the project based on the criteria outlined in the application. If the application meets the criteria, the project is moved on. If not, CBE will communicate with the host organization regarding the application and make changes if appropriate. Project Summary Document Once CBE Staff have reviewed the application, they will work with the host organization to put together a Project Summary Document that will serve as a discussion piece for the Academic Deans and Faculty who may be involved in the project. If the project is large in scope, a meeting with the host organization may be held in place of document creation. Academic Dean’s Review The Academic Dean reviews the project application for consistency with learning objectives and capacity of the Academic Area to do the project. If approved by the Dean the project is moved to the next step. Executive Review If the project is for a private/for-profit company, or if the project requires substantial College resources it will be reviewed by the Executive Vice President for approval prior to moving to the next step.

External Project Development Process Find a Faculty Champion CBE Staff will work with Academic Deans to find a Faculty Champion or if appropriate multiple Champions for the project. If a Faculty Champion is found, the project will move forward. Identify Project Team Once a Faculty Champion is identified, the CBE Staff will identify the project team, project manager, and define the team responsibilities. Project Partner Meeting Project manager will coordinate a meeting with the host organization and project team to discuss the academic opportunities around the project. If all parties are in agreement at the meeting, the project will move forward and a project timeline will be established. Implementation CBE Staff will work with the Faculty Champion to implement the project timeline. This includes getting all paperwork associated with the project signed (MOU’s, etc.) and supporting the faculty with project implementation where appropriate.
