What causes a volcano to erupt? The earth’s core is extremely hot and it heats the magma. When the magma gets really hot it begins to bubble. This bubbling creates carbon dioxide gas that expands. The expanding carbon dioxide gas creates pressure and pushes the magma up the vent of the volcano, causing an eruption.
