Job Performance Requirement 14-5 Two-Person Beam Raise

JPR 14-5A A The ladder is placed down on the beam parallel to the building approximately one-quarter the working distance of the ladder. The footer is positioned in such a way that the firefighter’s back is to the structure. The footer places a foot on the beam of the ladder to plant the pivot point of the raise. The toe of the boot is snubbed up against the heel of the ladder for stability and to secure the pivot point. The raiser is positioned approximately two-thirds of the length of the ladder away from the base and toward the tip, adjusting this position as necessary.

B When ready, the raiser grasps the beams or the rungs and raises the ladder to hip level using the strength of the legs as lifting mechanisms. JPR 14-5B

C Using the upper body with the back straight and legs slightly bent, the raiser then lifts the ladder overhead while stepping under the ladder and pivoting to face the footer in one fluid motion. JPR 14-5C

D Using a hand-over-hand motion, the raiser moves along the beam with outstretched arms while walking toward the footer, until the ladder is in the vertical position. JPR 14-5D

E Simultaneously, the footer uses both hands to steady the ladder by moving up the beam in a hand-over-hand method as the ladder ascends to the vertical position. The ladder is then lowered into the objective. JPR 14-5E
