Ionic Compounds Unit 6: Nomenclature Mrs. Callender

How do I name an ionic compound? Lesson Essential Questions: How do I write a formula for an ionic compound?

Writing Names of Binary Ionic Compounds Ex. BaO 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. 2. Change the ending of the second element (anion) to –ide. Barium Oxide You know it is a Binary Ionic Compound because it contains two (Bi) elements and one element is a metal and the other is a nonmetal.

Writing Names of Binary Ionic Compounds Ex. MgI 2 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. 2. Change the ending of the second element (anion) to –ide. Magnesium Iodide

Writing Names of Ionic Compounds with Polyatomic Ions Ex. MgIO 3 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. 2. Write the name of the anion. Magnesium Iodate You know it is a Polyatomic Ionic Compound because it contains more than two elements.

Writing Names of Ionic Compounds with Polyatomic Ions Ex. NH 4 IO 3 1. Write the Name of the first element (cation) as is. 2. Write the name of the anion. Ammonium Iodate You know it is a Polyatomic Ionic Compound because it contains more than two elements.

Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Sodium Iodide 1.Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. Na +1 I Check to see if the charges are balanced. +1-1= Net charge of zero which means it is balanced.

Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Barium Chloride 1.Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. Ba +2 Cl Check to see if the charges are balanced. +2-1= Net charge of +1 which means it is NOT balanced and will need a subscript. Not Balanced BaCl 2

What does the subscript mean? In review: remember Barium has 2 valence e- Ba Cl and chlorine has 7 valence e- Since Barium has two bonding sites it can have two anions bonded to it becoming…. BaCl 2

Writing Ionic Formulas Another way of writing a formula is by crisscrossing the charges. BaCl BaCl 2

Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Barium Nitrate 1.Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. Ba +2 NO Check to see if the charges are balanced. +2-1= Net charge of +1 which means it is NOT balanced and will need a subscript and parenthesis. Not Balanced Ba(NO 3 ) 2 2

Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Ammonium Sulfate 1.Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. NH 4 +1 SO Check to see if the charges are balanced. +1-2= Net charge of -1 which means it is NOT balanced and will need a subscript and parenthesis. Not Balanced (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 2

Writing Ionic Formulas Ex. Magnesium Carbonate 1.Write the formula for the anion and cation including the charges. Mg +2 CO Check to see if the charges are balanced. They are Balanced MgCO 3
