BY: NAYIRI BOGHOSSIAN CHEMISTRY PROJECT LESSON 9.2

 In the days before when someone discovered a new compound they would name it anything that would describe some property  Potassium Carbonate was (K 2 CO 3 ) which is named Potash it came from boiling wood ashes in iron pots.  The French chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and other chemists created the system of naming compounds. BACKGROUND

 Cation- Positive  Anion- Negative  Binary Compound is composed of two elements and can be either ionic or molecular.  To name any binary compound you must put the cation first then the anion.  To name a compound you would have to follow the rules. To name CuO, you would name this Copper Oxide, But it is incorrect.  Copper forms two cations. Oxide always has a 2- charge. Therefore it would be Cu 2 0. NAMING BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS

 Charges of Monatomic anions can be determined from the periodic table.  Monatomic ions- consist of a single atom with a positive or negative charge resulting from the loss or gain of one or more valence electrons, respectively.  To balance a compound it has to have 8 electron in total. NAMING BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS

 Write the symbol of the cation and then the anion. Add whatever subscripts are needed to balance the charges.  Positive charges must balance the negative charges so that the net ionic charge of the formula is zero.  Fe has a 3+ charge and 0 has a 2- charge  2(3+) + 3(2-)=0  Fe 2 O 3  Therefore this formula is correct because the overall charge of the formula is zero and the subscripts are in the lowest whole number ratio. WRITING FORMULAS FOR BINARY IONIC COMPOUND

 First, recognize that the compound contains poyatomic ion.  to name a compound containing a polyatomic, state the cation first and then the anion just as you did in naming binary ionic compounds.  Some ionic compounds containing polyatomic ions do not include a metal cation. NAMING COMPOUNDS WITH POLYATOMIC IONS
