Parenting REVIEW OF WEEK 1: Parenting Involves Discipline Discipline = Continuous Instruction Continuous Correction Process, Not Product The Danger is the Failure to Do So

Parenting TODAY’S OUTLINE: I. Instruction A. Model B. Meditate C. Mention II. Correction

Parenting "These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.“ - Deuteronomy 6:1-3 MODEL:

Parenting

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts." - Deuteronomy 6:4-6 MEDITATE:

Parenting "Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates." - Deuteronomy 6:7-9 MENTION:

Parenting

TODAY’S OUTLINE: I. Instruction A. Model B. Meditate C. Mention II. Correction A. Speak B. S____ ?

Parenting "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:4 SPEAK: Instruction = Admonition

Parenting Admonishment: 1) What was wrong. 2) Why it was wrong. -Immediate -Clear -Consistent

Parenting TODAY’S OUTLINE: I. Instruction A. Model B. Meditate C. Mention II. Correction A. Speak B. Spank

Parenting Proverbs 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him. Proverbs 23:13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. 14 Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. Proverbs 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. SPANK:

Parenting 1)The purpose of spanking is to counteract folly. In other words, spanking should be used in situations of rebellion and willful disobedience. (Proverbs 22:15) 2)Spanking hurts; it does involve a measured amount of physical pain. (Hebrews 12:11) 3) Spanking becomes excessive if it is causes a persisting bitterness in the child. (Momentary anger is not an issue.) (Ephesians 6:4 & Colossians 3:21). 4) Spanking is for "children," toddlers to young teens (Proverbs 22:15, 23:13, 29:15) 5) Spanking is by the "rod," literally a stick of wood, appropriately sized. BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE:

Parenting 1)Spanking exists to cause a measured amount of pain, not tissue damage. The rule is "sting, don't damage." 2)Spanking should be consistently applied; the child should have a clear understanding of under what conditions spanking will occur. 3)Spanking should be done calmly, without anger. 4)A parent should explain that he or she is spanking in order to teach obedience. 5)Spanking should be performed as close in time to the act of disobedience as possible. 6)The child should be told how many swats are coming. 7)Spanking should be followed immediately by admonition, forgiveness, and expressions of love. COMMON SENSE:

Parenting Sample Script: "Dear, you know what mommy said and you did not obey mommy. Now I have to spank you. You know I am not mad at you but you must learn to obey. I will be giving you three swats.... Now why did mommy have to spank you?....That's right, because you didn't obey. Remember to obey your mommy. Now I forgive you. And I love you."

Parenting Other Form of Correction: Loss of Privilege

Parenting SUMMARY OF PARENTAL DISCIPLINE: (1) Instruct - Model - Meditate - Mention (2) Correct - Speak (Admonish) - Spank (Measured Pain)
