What Does the Lord Require of You? Deuteronomy 10:12-13; (cf.10:14-11:32) Lessons from Moses’ Farewell Sermon

What Does the Lord Require of You? Don’t … Miss SS, church, etc. Drink Smoke Dance Make lots of money Buy a new car

Moses & Deuteronomy In the book of Deuteronomy Moses is summarizing and restating the Law for Israel. Before they enter into the land they were reminded of God’s Covenant. The section we are looking at summarizes the heart of the relationship between God and His people. What does the Lord require of each of His children? What follows is the Lord’s answer. These five words appear repeatedly in this book. They are interlaced

What Does the Lord Require of You? God answered that question by telling us to reverence (respect), follow, love, serve and obey Him.

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 12  “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. 13  And you must always obey the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 (NLT)

What Does the Lord Require of You? Worship Him Follow Him Love Him Serve Him Obey Him

20 You must fear the LORD your God and worship him and cling to him 20  You must fear the LORD your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone. 21  He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes. Deuteronomy 10:20- 21 (NLT) Fear the Lord Fear the Lord (Worship, Reverence or Respect) (10:12, 20-21)

Fear the Lord (10:12, 20) Why does fearing or worshipping the Lord stand at the head of this list? Fear is a healthy response to someone who controls the universe. (10:14) Respect is the correct response to someone who is both merciful and just. (10:17-18) Reverence is the right response to someone who delivered you from (spiritual) death. (10:21; cf. 11:2-7)

Fear the Lord (10:12, 20) How do we properly show our fear of the Lord? We reverence the Lord when we hold fast to Him. (10:20) We honor and respect our God as we ‘take our oaths in His name’. (10:20) We show our ‘fear’ of the Lord when we praise Him for who He is and for what He has done. (10:21)

Follow the Lord 22 “Be careful to obey all these commands I am giving you. Show love to the LORD your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him. Deuteronomy 11:22 (NLT) Walk in all His Ways (Follow) (10:12, 11:22)

Follow the Lord (10:12, 11:22) What does it mean to walk in all His ways? Walking in His ways means that we are not drawn away from Him to other ‘gods’. (11:16) Walking in the ways of the Lord is another way of saying that we seek to follow in the Lord’s will for our life. (11:18) Following the Lord means that we teach His ways to our children (and others). (11:19-21)

Follow the Lord (10:12, 11:22) How can we follow the Lord? We follow the Lord by not letting the things of this world distract and waylay us. (1John 2:15-17)

Follow the Lord (10:12, 11:22) How can we follow the Lord? 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:15-17 (NIV)

Follow the Lord (10:12, 11:22) How can we follow the Lord? We follow the Lord by committing every area of our life to Him. (1John 2:6) 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6 (NIV) We follow the Lord while leading our children (& others) to Christ. (3John 4) 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:4 (NIV)

1  “You must love the LORD your God and obey all his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands…13  “If you carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and soul, Deuteronomy 11:1, 13 (NLT) Love the Lord Love the Lord (Love) (10:12, 11:1, 13, 22)

Love the Lord 22  “Be careful to obey all these commands I am giving you. Show love to the LORD your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him. Deuteronomy 11:22 (NLT) Love the Lord (Love) (10:12, 11:1, 13, 22)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) Why should we love the Lord? Because we owe Him our lives. (11:1-7) If we love the Lord he will provide for us. (11:13) If we love the Lord he will give us victory. (1John 5:4; cf. 11:22) 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:4 (NIV)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) Why should we love the Lord? Because of His great love for us. In Christ (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1John 4:9-10) 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NIV) 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) Why should we love the Lord? Because of His great love for us. In Christ (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1John 4:9-10) 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 (NIV)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) Why should we love the Lord? Because of His great love for us. In Salvation (Eph. 2:4-5; cf. Deut. 7:8) 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) Why should we love the Lord? Because of His great love for us. In Adoption (1John 3:1) 1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) How can we express our love for the Lord? By loving God with our whole life: Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deut. 6:5) By loving one another (our fellow Christians): "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35)

Love the Lord (10:12, 11:1,13, 22) How can we express our love for the Lord? By loving our neighbors (our fellow man): And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'( Matt. 22:39) By obeying God: This is love for God: to obey his commands. (1John 5:3; cf. Deut. 11:1)

Serve the Lord 13  “If you carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and soul, Deuteronomy 11:13 (NLT) Serve Him with all your heart and soul (Serve) (10:12, 20, 11:13)

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) Why do we serve the Lord? Because He called us to be His own people. (10:15-16; cf. 1Peter 2:9-10) 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) Why do we serve the Lord? Because we reverence and respect Him and wish to honor Him with our life. (10:20) If we serve the Lord he will provide for us. (11:13) To build up His church. (1Peter 4:10) 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) How can we serve the Lord? Living for Him - By being a living sacrifice. (Rom. 12:1-2) 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) How can we serve the Lord? Loving for Him - By being a channel of His love to others. (Heb. 6:10-12; Gal 5:13) 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) How can we serve the Lord? Loving for Him - By being a channel of His love to others. (Heb. 6:10-12; Gal 5:13) 13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) How can we serve the Lord? Laboring for Him - By persevering in grace as we labor for the Lord. (1Cor. 15:58; cf. 1Pet. 4:10) 58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV)

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) How can we serve the Lord? Laboring for Him - By persevering in grace as we labor for the Lord. (1Cor. 15:58; cf. 1Pet. 4:10) 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

Serve the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:13) How can we serve the Lord? Praying to Him - By prayers and intercessions. (1Tim. 2:1) 1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-- 1 Timothy 2:1 (NIV)

Obey the Lord 8  “Therefore, be careful to obey every command I am giving you today… 26  “Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! 27  You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today. Observe His commands (Obey) (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32)

Obey the Lord 28  But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the LORD your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before. Deuteronomy 11:8, 26-28 (NLT) Observe His commands (Obey) (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32)

Obey the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32) Why are we to obey the Lord’s commands? For our own good. (10:13; 11:8-9) To express our love. (11:1) To glorify His name. (Matt. 5:16) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

Obey the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32) What are the results of our obedience? We receive the Lord’s blessings. (James 1:25; cf. 11:8-9) 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25 (NIV)

Obey the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32) What are the results of our obedience? Life, the abundant and eternal life; divine fellowship. (John 14:23; cf. John 10:10) 23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. John 14:23 (NIV)

Obey the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32) What are the results of our obedience? Wisdom for life. (Psalm 119:97-104) 97 Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. 98 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. 99 I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. 100 I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.

Obey the Lord (10:12, 20, 11:8-9, 13, 26-32) What are the results of our obedience? Wisdom for life. (Psalm 119:97-104) 101 I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word. 102 I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Psalms 119:97-104 (NIV)

Application: "What does God expect of me?" Worship Him! Follow Him! Love Him! Serve Him! Obey Him!

Application: "What does God expect of me?" How often we complicate faith with man-made rules, regulations, and requirements. Are you frustrated and burned out from trying hard to please God? Concentrate on His real requirements and find peace.
