Introduction to Implementing an Institutional Repository
Presentation transcript:

Felix Ubogu & Charl Roberts

What is an IR?  An Institutional Repository is an online locus for collecting, preserving, and disseminating -- in digital form -- the intellectual output of an institution, particularly a research institution.digitalintellectual institutionresearch institution  For a university, this would include materials such as research journal articles, before (preprints) and after (postprints) undergoing peer review, and digital versions of theses and dissertations, but it might also include other digital assets generated by normal academic life, such as administrative documents, course notes, or learning objects.universityresearch journalpreprintspostprints peer reviewtheses dissertations digital assetslearning objects

Why?  The four main objectives for having an institutional repository are: to create global visibility for an institution's scholarly research; to collect content in a single location; to provide open access to institutional research output by self-archiving it;open accessself-archiving to store and preserve other institutional digital assets, including unpublished or otherwise easily lost ("grey") literature (e.g., theses or technical reports).

What we’ve done at the Library so far…  Setup of DSPACE as an IR  Setup of the Library IR Workgroup  Migrated exam papers and electronic theses and dissertations to the IR  Setup of Communities, sub-communities and collections on the IR  Creation of an IR Workflow  General support of the system  Proposed IR Policy

How the Library assists with Collection setup  Meeting to discuss the collection requirement  Advise on copyright issues  Setup of communities and collections  Setup “upload accounts”  Creation of a workflow  Control access to content  Training for staff assigned to IR population  Technical assistance

What is currently on the Wits IR?  Exam Papers  ETD  Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS)  Centre for Health Policy (CHP)  Some test communities
