The English Reformation - Welcome! Please hand in your 95 Theses and your Creation Story Assignments on Mrs. Parker’s desk. - Take your seats, take out a sheet of paper, and answer the following question about the picture of King Henry VIII of England: What impression of Henry do you get from this picture?

England Before the English Reformation -King Henry VIII stood firmly against the Protestant revolt -England was a Catholic country -The pope awarded him the title “Defender of the Faith” after he denounced against Luther

Why did the English Reformation Start? In 1527, Henry became at odds with the Church He was married to Catherine of Aragon and had one surviving child, Mary Tudor. He wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, hoping that she would bear him a son.

Catholic law does not permit divorces Hoping that Anne Boleyn would bear him a son, he asked the pope to annul his marriage The pope refused because of Charles V, the Holy Roman emperor.

Pope vs. King Henry decided to take over the English Church Acting through parliament, Henry takes the pope’s control away The power would be placed under Henry’s rule

The Act of Supremacy, 1534 Albeit, the King's Majesty justly and rightfully is and oweth to be the supreme head of the Church of England, and so is recognised by the clergy of this realm in their Convocations; yet nevertheless for corroboration and confirmation thereof, and for increase of virtue in Christ's religion within this realm of England, and to repress and extirp all errors, heresies and other enormities and abuses heretofore used in the same, Be it enacted by authority of this present Parliament that the King our sovereign lord, his heirs and successors kings of this realm, shall be taken, accepted and reputed the only supreme head in earth of the Church of England called Anglicana Ecclesia, and shall have and enjoy annexed and united to the imperial crown of this realm as well the title and style thereof, as all honours, dignities, preeminences, jurisdictions, privileges, authorities, immunities, profits and commodities, to the said dignity of supreme head of the same Church belonging and appertaining. And that our said sovereign lord, his heirs and successors kings of this realm, shall have full power and authority from time to time to visit, repress, redress, reform, order, correct, restrain and amend all such errors, heresies, abuses, offences, contempts and enormities, whatsoever they be, which by any manner spiritual authority or jurisdiction ought or may lawfully be reformed, repressed, ordered, redressed corrected, restrained or amended, most to the pleasure of Almighty God, the increase of virtue in Christ's religion, and for the conservation of the peace, unity and tranquillity of this realm: any usage, custom, foreign laws, foreign authority, prescription or any other thing or things to the contrary hereof notwithstanding.

The Act of Supremacy Made people in England accept Henry’s divorce Many loyal Catholics refused to accept the Act of Supremacy and were executed for treason Example: Sir Thomas More (humanist) The English had to recognize Henry as the head of the Church in England

Thomas Cranmer Appointed Thomas Cranmer archbishop. Cranmer annulled Henry’s marriage. Henry wed Anne Boleyn, who bore him a second daughter, Elizabeth. In the years ahead, Henry married four more times...

The New Church of England Between , royal officials investigated English convents and monasteries deeming them immoral Henry ordered them to be closed. He confiscated their lands and wealth He granted some of the lands to nobles and other high-ranking citizens
