Today’s Standard 2.2 Analyze text that uses proposition and support patterns. proposition support

Proposition= an opinion put forth by someone. Support= a reason that answers the question why about the proposition statement. Example: Proposition: Public schools should have a school uniform policy WHY? Support: Safer campus because intruders can easily be identified Support: School uniforms emphasize group identity, which promotes school pride. Support: Wearing school uniforms prevent the creation of clothing related cliques.

Examples of Support: Facts, including the results of scientific research and surveys. Studies from Long Beach, CA. have shown that the number of suspensions had decreased since the mandatory school uniform policy took effect Statistics– facts in number form. In 21 states and the District of Columbia, schools and districts have the right to tell students what to wear Examples– specific instances that illustrate reasons or facts. When the whole school has to wear the same thing, no one can be picked on

Examples of Support: Anecdotes– brief stories, such as personal experiences 8 year old Carina likes that her principal wears the same uniform as the students Definitions-the formal statement of the meaning At the Cramp School, the uniform consists of white shirts, red ties, and navy blue bottoms Opinions from Experts on the subject, especially with direct quotations. Principal Karen Williams said, “We’re not here to parade outfits around. We’re here with our shirts tucked in, ready for the day.”

Your turn! California is considering eliminating all non-academic subjects (art, music, P.E. etc.) from middle schools to put more emphasis on math, English, history and science. State a proposition on this subject and give 3 sentences of support. Tell what kind of evidence you have used as support (fact, example, statistics, quote, expert opinion, personal experience, or anecdote).
