Cramp Elementary This is how we did it…

Starting Out Get Administration on board – support is important Explain that students will have cameras in school, at home (possibly) Explain that students will be given rules to follow about the cameras  No pictures of people without permission  No cameras in class, during classes time, unless classroom teacher allows for it  Students will show responsibility for the camera, it’s a privilege  Parental Permissions required

Starting Out S ET U P

Set Up Get your paperwork in order, create a paper LTP folder  Camera warranties  Printer and cameras direction sheets  CDs  Student permission slip blanks  Information about LTP for handouts

Set Up Get equipment from LTP Log in ALL cameras and equipment Try all equipment; insert batteries into cameras Give copy of log to Tech Support (school) – back up Create a Student Camera log sheet Create a LTP folder on your computer for image downloads and back ups  Classroom numbers  Internal folders with student names  Homework Due Dates

Set Up Copy student permission slips Copy of class attendance sheet to log in permissions or Non permissions Gather images for first class decoding image

Starting Out: C OLLABORATION

Collaboration Talk to classroom teachers  How do they want to start?  Possible themes to explore?  When?  Is there a common collaboration time (common prep)?  When to have the teaching artist come in?  Let them know your concerns, timing, schedule, etc.  Once a month homework assignments  Every other week, rotating cameras  Homework buddies  Be honest about timing

Staring Out: FIRST ART CLASS

First Art Class Discussion  Student privilege and responsibility  Camera safety  How to store it  Don’t flash it around  Don’t let older or younger siblings use it – it’s your responsibility  Accidents happen – just let me know about it when it does happen  Limit use of previewing images – uses a lot of energy  Logging in cameras/logging out

Portraits

First Art Class Picture Taking  Have to use the cameras provided, do not allow for using cameras from home  Appropriate images  What is acceptable vs non appropriate – it’s your responsibility  Photographer safety – when is it not appropriate to take pictures  Lighting  Blurry images – can they work?  Cropped images – use the viewer!  Interesting angles  Limit the number of images for homework to no more than 20

Homework Set strict deadline first time around Signing out cameras Checking cameras to make sure they work Assigning or choosing a homework buddy Review assignment Take a photo taking trip around the school to practice with the cameras

Homework On Deadline Day  Log in cameras  Download images to computer into student folders  Print a shuffle page for students to pick from  Check off log  Delete images from disk to clean it out for the next time  If you have a student teacher – they can do this or train a student to do at lunch time Have students create a photography portfolio to save all shuffle pages, final prints and photo ideas
