Paraphrasing vs Summarizing Presentation taken and altered from: Student Support Services Troy University; Troy, AL trojan.troy.edu/.../Summarizing%20and%20Paraphrasing

What is Paraphrasing? Paraphrasing is the process of rewriting someone else’s idea(s) into your own words. It requires you to re-word your information. A paraphrase usually is as long as the original passage. A paraphrase my include some of the same words as the original quote. However, try to use your own words or synonyms whenever you can.

What is Summarizing? Summarizing is the main idea of the work. A summary is condensed (more briefly stated) when compared to the original passage or quote.

Let’s Practice! Paraphrase and Summarize this quote: “In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.” Michael Jackson
