S HIPWRECK I NFORMATION : The ship was built in 1940 and worked as a cruise liner until 1993 It was going to Thailand to be re-fitted as a five star hotel in 1994 The S.S. American Star was being towed when it was caught in a thunderstorm and snapped in two The wreck was left on a beach near Fuerteventura The stern sank in 1996 It finally sank in 2008, but about feet of the bow is still above water Many of the fittings were stripped and are now in bars on the island
