Cost Effective Analysis of Cell Saver Program at UCSF Medical Center Contracted Vendor versus In- House Program

What is Cell Saver? Cell salvage or cell saver is a technique used during surgery to collect blood that a patient loses during surgery, process the collected blood, and reinfuse the blood into the patient.

Current Situation UCSF Medical Center’s Moffitt-Long Operating Room contracts cell saver service to an outside vendor. Autotransfusion, Inc. provides the service UCSF Medical Center pays approx. $48,300 a month to Autotransfusion, Inc. to provide the service.

Services that utilize Cell Saver Neuro-Spine Service Ortho-Spine Service Vascular Service Liver Transplant Service

Current Cell Saver Costs Autotransfusion, Inc. Costs for providing cell saver service: Neuro-Spine = $ a patient Ortho-Spine = $ a patient Vascular = $ a patient Liver Transplant = $928.86

Proposed Solution Implement in-house cell saver program Discontinue using contracted vendor, Autotransfusion, Inc.

Cost Effective Analysis of UCSF Cell Saver Program vs. Autotransfusion, Inc. Neuro-Spine Service (Feb.-Mar. 2006) 18 procedures / 124 hours Autotransfusion, Inc. = $12,600 UCSF Cell Saver Program (Full-time employee and supply) = $5,544 Cost Savings = $7,056(56% cost savings)

Cost Effective Analysis of UCSF Cell Saver Program vs. Autotransfusion, Inc. Ortho-Spine Service (Feb.-Mar. 2006) 54 procedures / 525 hours Autotransfusion, Inc. = $37,800 UCSF Cell Saver Program (Full-time employee and supply) = $20,763 Cost Savings = $17,037(45% cost savings)

Cost Effective Analysis of UCSF Cell Saver Program vs. Autotransfusion, Inc. Vascular Service (Feb.-Mar. 2006) 11 procedures / 66 hours Autotransfusion, Inc. = $7,700 UCSF Cell Saver Program (Full-time employee and supply) = $3,124 Cost Savings = $4,576(59% cost savings)

Cost Effective Analysis of UCSF Cell Saver Program vs. Autotransfusion, Inc. Liver Transplant Service (Feb.-Mar. 2006) 34 procedures / 254 hours Autotransfusion, Inc. = $31, UCSF Cell Saver Program (Full-time employee and supply) = $19, Cost Savings = $11,842(27% cost savings)

Summary UCSF paid Autotransfusion, Inc. $89, in Feb./Mar to provide cell saver services to the Moffitt-Long operating room. If UCSF had its own cell saver program the medical center would have spent $49, in Feb/Mar to provide the service. The medical center could have saved $40,511.00

Summary UCSF Medical Center should consider implementing its own cell saver program. 42% to 45% yearly cost savings.
