What is Induction ? Two-year program of “job-embedded” learning for preliminary credentialed teachers –3-year teacher preparation program One year at the university level Two years “on-the-job” training –Apprentice –Journeyman

Who participates in a BTSA Induction Program? Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential Preliminary Single Subject Credential Education Specialist Credential, Level I Out-of-state preparation with less than 5 years experience

BTSA Induction Goals Improve beginning teaching performance Improve teaching of students from diverse backgrounds Increase new teacher satisfaction Retain capable new teachers

Success of BTSA Induction? Teacher Retention Data (TRD) from 1999 to 2003: -Four out of 10 teacher remain in the profession after five years. TRD from 2003 to Nine out of 10 teacher remain after five years.

What is an Induction Program? An initiation into the teaching profession ~ guided by –Professional Teacher Induction Standards, –California Standards for the Teaching Profession, and –State-Adopted Academic Content and Performance Standards for Students A route from a Preliminary Credential to a Professional Clear Credential

Support Paired with a mentor, also known as a support provider or advisor Meets on a weekly basis with the new teacher In most cases, the mentor will become the confidant, buddy, or “life-saver!”

Formative Assessment Cycle FAC take place during each year of Induction -Understanding Context in 1 st semester. -Setting and Reflecting on Professional Goals ongoing throughout the year. -Examining Practice Through Inquiry in 2 nd semester.

Content Requirements for a Professional Level Credential “Real” teaching performance tasks~ “job- embedded learning” in the areas of Teaching Curriculum to All Students –Standard 5: Pedagogy Use and interpret student assessment Plan and differentiate instruction Maintain well-managed classrooms Users of technological resources

Content Requirements for a Professional Clear Credential Teaching All Students –Standard 6: Universal Access: Equity for all Students a. Teaching English Learners b. Teaching Special Populations »A.

Professional Development BTSA Seminars/ are focused on the learner and how to demonstrate application of the teaching competencies for: –Standard 5: Pedagogy –Standard 6: Universal Access :Equity for all Students a. Teaching English Learners b. Teaching Special Populations

Induction: Pathway to a Professional Clear Credential Preliminary credential issued by the university Preliminary credential is cleared by demonstrating and documenting “real” teaching performance tasks ~ “job-embedded learning” Participation in BTSA along with professional development meets the “real” teaching performance tasks and provides the documentation required Apply to the BTSA Induction Program for professional clear credential Professional clear credential is earned after completing two years of teaching
