Abstract Basically assuming the road traffic as a computer LAN. Our fuel saver system uses radio frequency transmitting and receiving technique to communicate messages which controls the ON or OFF of the vehicle engines in traffic signals, there by optimizing fuel consumption and also at the same time reducing pollution (air and noise pollution). The system is fully automated with no any interfaces. ADVANTAGES: Reduction in Air and Noise Pollution, Optimization of Fossil Fuel usage, Better implementation of traffic rules. System could be set up in any vehicle in any part of the world. Hence once set up it can be used to save large amount of fuel, which not only reduces fuel consumption but also reduces air pollution which in turn reduces global warming, and the chain goes on. Imagine the huge road traffic as a computer network ! Each and every vehicles as a node in the network with a unique MAC address The implementation s requires every vehicle to be fitted with the RF receiver and a micro- controller All the traffic signals can creates a VLAN for a big range and organize the network in a client server remotely control architecture. every vehicle to be fitted with the RF receiver and a micro- controller and a GUI inter face The traffic signal have a wireless Wi-Fi router and create a ad hoc network. And using the transmitter its control the network nodes The traffic signal work as a switch and create a LAN network. And also get a MAC table using ARP protocol and assign a IPv6 address then send a broadcast message to control the traffic. Ex: Data base server Vehicles with individual MAC address clients Traffic lights with MAC address table using ARP protocol Containing all the IPv6 ‘A’ records(AAAA) of vehicle in the particular network(road traffic) The Concept is…. Firstly the vehicle when it enters the lane which leads to a traffic signal, it will receive a network ID which becomes the identity of all the vehicles belonging to that range of the wireless “ad hoc” network(around 500m), the network ID received by the vehicle receiver is stored by the micro- controller present in the vehicle. When the vehicle comes to halt at the traffic signal, the vehicle receiver receives the network ID transmitted by the signal transmitter present in the traffic signal. the vehicle micro controller then matches this network ID received, with the stored network ID which it had received when it entered the lane leading to traffic signal. when the red light glow the micro-controller sends a SLEEP engine command, which will turn the vehicle engine SLEEP MODE. then the vehicle micro controller sends a START engine command, which starts the engine automatically when the green light glow. 2001:0DA8:E800:0000:0260:3EFF:FE47:0001 switch -By using the IP address the intelligent traffic signal can identify the special vehicles like police and ambulance.. It will let them pass the signals when its needed. -Drive assist in hilly sections Due to narrow roads, only one vehicle would be capable of negotiation a turn at once. When two vehicles approach from both sides, a signaling point could be set up at the point of the turn and the vehicles could communicate with each other and the signal. Thereby assisting each other to safely negotiate the turn. -Intelligent Braking System – Vehicle communication is the vehicle moving ahead brakes suddenly applies brakes, the driver of the vehicle behind will have very less time to react to it. To minimize the effects, signals can be sent to the vehicles behind as the vehicle applies brakes suddenly and necessary actions could be taken. - Regulate vehicles to run at optimum speed: System would assist the driver to drive at an optimum speed (speed at which the output power of the vehicle is high considering low emissions by the vehicle), keeping road conditions and vehicle model in mind etc..To regulate fuel usage in all kinds of engines. This system could be fit into vehicle running on non-conventional fuels (hydrogen fuel, solar powered etc.) to regulate the fuel usage for optimization. *T hough the initial setting up charges do apply, but the system is cheaper with a complete module (transmitter or the receiver) not costing more than 5000/= which is not a huge amount. The long term benefits are very high. The system is highly reliable and don’t need much of maintenance, so its easily support developing countries like SRILANKA very well
