Symbolism: The Importance of women in and out of the household during the 1940’s and World War II.

How does this “Iron” tie to me? My great-grandmother’s-passed along in the family The symbolism and significance of this items ties to my womanhood and the struggle of the women before me History of women

Significance of Women in the 1940’s

Significance in the Home Perform household duties such as cleaning, cooking, sewing, and ironing During WWII, women at home assisted with the community efforts such as day care centers and war bonds. Housewives found themselves working harder to meet family needs Victory Gardens

Significance Outside of the Home Because of WWII, jobs for women opened up Left their old jobs and became welders, riveters, assemblers, and inspectors Women in the war were mostly assigned as nurses or clerical workers

Government and media launched campaign to get women active in the war effort by getting a job By the end of WWII, approximately 6 million women entered the labor force for the first time “Do your part, free a man for service.”

The Struggle No-time off and work holidays Less pay for the same job Discriminatory actions and looks “The happiest day of my life will be when I say goodbye to each one of you women as I usher you out the door” “You won’t learn it, women can’t do that job”

“Rosie the Riveter” How many people have seen this picture? Demonstrated: stamina, strength, coordination,, mechanical and technological knowledge

My artifact symbolizes the crucial roles and strength of women during the war effort, in the household, and presently today. Conclusion
