Green IT in the real world of 2014 Green, Lean, Mean? 26 th March London

Head of IT and Business Communications Wandsworth Council David Tidey

My Background IT Manager in Local Government for 20+ years Keen interest in Green IT for over 7 years

My stance Data is king –Measure –Measure again –Re-measure Always challenge assumptions Always cross check your own data

Some Staff Suggestions I suggest that the IT Section devises a reminder to insert into the shut down process to remind people to TURN OFF THE SCREEN My idea, as raised at the Green Champions meeting, is that the IT Service adds a Screen saver to all Council screens to include wording: ' Save Energy and remember to switch off your PC Could we have some sort of logo that flashes up at the end of the day when our PC's are switching off. Something like 'last one out then switch off the lights'. This may be a little expensive to set up but I feel sure that it will pay for itself. Which one should be the priority?

DELL 21” flat screen monitor –20.5W in normal use –0.9W in standby DELL PC –70W in normal use –1.1W in standby Wyse (thin client) terminal –7.4W in normal use –1.1W in standby Office lights – 4 fittings each with 4 x 14W tubes –224W

Multi-function device (printer/scanner etc.) –40W idle –17W in powersave mode –200W-1,500W when printing Desktop printer –24.5W idle –6.3W in powersave mode –Up to 1,400W when printing

What is our IT carbon footprint?

How is the IT contribution broken down?

What’s our action plan Concentrate on the data centre –More server virtualisation/rationalisation -100 physical vs 350 virtual servers -However, some old server kit that can be decommissioned –Reorganisation of our air-conditioning -Hot/cold aisle -However, consumption is only 25% of server energy – BUT IS THIS CORRECT? –Move to 85% thin-client –Printer rationalisation
