Roman Potter

During Roman times Potters were very important as there were no factories to produce cups, plates, pots and jars. Every item had to be handmade using clay and a potters wheel.

The table is turned by the potter spinning the large stone wheel with his foot.

The potter wets the clay to keep it soft enough to mould.

The pointed shaped vases are called amphora. They are used to hold oil, grapes, fish, wine and other commodities. Find out more. Click on the button.

This is a clay oil lamp, they use olive oil as fuel.

These are a selection of pottery vessels. What do you think they were used for?

These plaques and wall hangings would have been used to decorate houses. They are made from moulds.

These pots are called face pots, can you guess why?

We made our own face pots. Why don’t you try and make one yourself as well?
