Naughty( 调皮的 ) Play jokes on others Kind / Help others Dislike school & church Like free & adventurous life Dream of becoming a pirate ( 海盗 ) Describe a group of children Interesting/amusing/vivid Similar to the childhood life of Mark Twain Lack love & care of his parents The life of the small town (Tom lives) on the Mississippi River resembles the life of the whole America ( 美国生活的缩影 ) Popular with readers of all ages

Mark Twain's classic satirical short story A poor and honest young man Henry Adams gets a one-million bank note from two brothers. The two want to know if money can change the life of a poor man. One believes that money is useless to any poor man; the other believes that money is very Useful and it can change a poor man’s life. After receiving the note, the man’s life changes a lot. The book tells us how useful the money is. Money talks! ( 有钱能使鬼推磨 )

Mark twain liked to play jokes on others. But once a joke was played on him. One day Mark Twain was invited to give a talk in a small town in the morning. At lunch he met a young man, one of his friends. The young man said that he had an uncle with him. He told Mark Twain that his uncle never laughed or smiled, and that nobody or nothing was able to make his uncle laugh,” You bring your uncle to my talk this evening,” said Mark Twain.” “ I’m sure I can make him laugh.” That evening the young man and his uncle sat in the front. Mark Twain began to speak. He told several funny stories and made everyone in the room laugh. But the man never even smiled. Mark Twain continued to tell his funny stories. Finally he stopped. He was tired and quite disappointed. Some days later, Mark Twain told another friend of his about what had happened. ”Oh,” said his friend,” I know that man. He’s been deaf for years.” Why did the man’s uncle never smile?

Mark Twain’s Absent-mindedness( 健忘 ) One day, the famous American writer Mark Twain was riding in a train. Shortly after the train pulled out of ( 离开 )the station, the conductor( 列车员 ) came to examine tickets. When he came to Twain’s seat, he found the writer fast asleep. He woke him up and said, “Excuse me, sir, may I have a look at your ticket, please?” Mark Twain looked for the ticket in all his pockets, but without success. The conductor, who knew the familiar face of the writer, said, “It doesn’t really matter if you can’t find it. Show me your ticket on your journey back.” “Oh, it doesn’t matter very much to you, but it matters very much to me. I must find my ticket, otherwise how will I know where I’m going to get off?”
