2 Program Overview Energy conservation program offered by CenterPoint Energy at no cost for selected high schools Program goals are to: –Raise awareness for energy conservation –Change behavior to have a positive impact on the environment –Promote energy savings 1 st School Year: August 2012 – June 2013
3 Program Services Work with staff to promote energy efficiency awareness school-wide Educational material and activities are provided for participating students (high school physical science) on: –Concept of energy –Understanding of energy conservation –Methods of reducing energy consumption Educational materials are designed to align with TEKS guidelines
4 Program Services (cont’d) Applied activities enhance the lessons: –School building energy audits –Home energy conservation activities –Round table discussions –Promotional initiatives Training & on-going support provided for participating teachers Select schools receive expert energy assessment targeting low-cost operational changes
5 School Energy Audits Each participating school is loaned a basic energy audit kit Participating teachers conduct energy audits with their students Students create energy audit reports School Kit Contents: - Light meter - Watt meter - Infrared temperature sensor - Incandescent light bulb - Compact fluorescent light bulb - Screw-in adapters
6 Customer Eligibility High schools (9 th – 12 th grades) Public or private schools CenterPoint Energy’s electric service territory Commitment for active participation in the Program Significant energy savings potential (for expert energy assessment) CenterPoint Energy approval (limited enrollment this year)
7 Program Benefits Requires no financial obligation for schools Educates and empowers students Helps schools achieve energy & cost savings Provides innovative lessons & activities Provides teacher training & support Encourages environmentally-conscious behavior Promotes school’s accomplishments
8 School’s Responsibilities Identify staff to participate in the Program Ensure participation of staff and students Encourage energy conservation awareness throughout the school Ensure proper use of program materials Implementation of Owner-selected low cost energy efficiency improvements Promote the school’s Program success within the community
9 Program Responsibilities Provide educational materials & recommended activities on energy conservation Provide training & on-going support to appropriate school staff Provide school energy audit kit for student audits Provide expert energy assessment of select schools to identify low cost improvements Provide assistance in promoting the school’s Program success within the community
10 Program Steps Fill out & submit customer application If approved, sign Memorandum of Understanding Attend kick-off meeting/teacher training Conduct the Program at the school -Classroom lessons -Classroom activities -At-home activities -School-wide initiatives Promote Program success community-wide
