MASC Report – ka nui te tautoko! What does 2015 look like for Māori smokers? About 155,000 current Māori smokers. 77,500 to quit by & no new smokers. 15,500 each year, for the next 5 years! How are we going to awhi those smokers?

Awhi Mai Awhi Atu™ - a workplace training programme 1.5 days of training - face to face Online learning component - Ngā Kete Hauora™ Quit Card Provider certification ABC’s and cessation advice integrated into work plans Kaupapa Māori based and focused Te kaupapa – what is it?

No preaching! Strengths based. Lets put the smoker at the heart of the matter. Cost effective – no need to develop a new workforce. Our points of difference:

Nga Kete Hauora

Porotiti – taonga puoro as a smoking cessation aid Porotiti

What the rangatahi said about the porotiti….. “I used it, during class times when I wanted a smoke...it relaxed me.” Female aged 12 “When you wanted to have a smoke, just go read it [information about taonga puoro] and played with the Porotiti. It’s a big help.” Female aged 15 I used it [the porotiti] instead of getting up and getting a smoke.” Male aged 16

Ngā whainga – our aims: Address the barriers that Māori smokers may experience in receiving cessation support. Invest in the current Māori workforce. Train Māori to offer smoking cessation advice to their whānau, friends, colleagues and clients.

Mauri ōra ki a koutou katoa!
