Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 3 Relevant Information  Oshawa is a City of 152,000 residents.  The City has 2 significant employers, General Motors & UOIT.  Hockey in Oshawa began with the start of the 20th century, playing on outdoor rinks, with the 1st indoor surface, the Bradley Arena, opening for the 1910 season.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 4 Oshawa Hockey History Oshawa Hockey History  1928, the Bradley Arena burned down, leaving Oshawa with only outdoor rinks.  1930 the new Oshawa Arena was completed. In the1933/34 season, Oshawa MHA was born, playing out of the Oshawa Arena. Oshawa MHA would pick All Star teams from all players registered at Bantam, Midget & Juvenile.  At Playoff time, the All Star teams would enter the OMHA playdowns for Provincial titles.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 5 Oshawa Hockey History Oshawa Hockey History  1947 the Neighborhood Association Sports Committee (now the NASC) was formed to provide Hockey for the very young to Peewee age children. The Oshawa Catholic Youth (CYO) organization also started a smaller league for Atom to Midget.  September 1953 the Oshawa Arena burned down. There would be no indoor ice for the next 3 seasons. For the next 3 years, players would be bussed to Port Perry & Bowmanville to play.  In 1956, Childrens Arena was built. It is still used today. In the early 1960s the North Oshawa Arena was built, to enclose the outdoor pad that was in use.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 6 Oshawa Hockey History Oshawa Hockey History  Because of the huge demand for ice the City of Oshawa built Harman Park 2 pad and the Civic Auditorium (1966) and Donevan Arena in The Civic Auditorium was closed in 2007, after the General Motors Centre was built.  In 1966 Oshawa LNHL was formed, starting with Novice and expanding to 36 teams to Juvenile, with Minor & Major at each age level. The LNHL would eventually become the Oshawa MHA “A” Rep teams from Novice to Midget.  Since 2005 the City of Oshawa built the 4 pad Legends Complex, 2 pad UOIT Campus Ice Centre and the 2 pad General Motors Centre for a total of 12 pads available within the City of Oshawa.  The Oshawa Hockey history is very rich with many OMHA and Provincial Championships. We have had more than 140 graduates go to the OHL with more than 20 going on to play in the modern day NHL

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 7 Oshawa Hockey Structure Oshawa Hockey Structure  In 1997, the NASC & the OCHL would become affiliated to Oshawa MHA as HL.  Both organizations would have 2 seats on the Oshawa MHA Board. This affiliation would prove to be very successful in smoothing out the bumps and provide a good working relationship between the HL & Rep Hockey.  Both the NASC & OCHL offer similar programs from Initiation to Juvenile with about 1700 participants between the 2 leagues.  Since 2005, Oshawa MHA has offered Rep from Novice to Midget at AE, A, AA, AAA for about 612 Rep Players.  This coming season, we have 2 teams at Novice AE. This will be our Development for Novice AA & AAA for the season. It is an experiment that will put these under age Novice AE (6 & 7 yr olds) into competitive hockey in preparation for Novice AA & AAA.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 8 Oshawa Hockey Structure Oshawa Hockey Structure  Oshawa MHA operates the Rep program. The two affiliated HLs operate under the OMHA Manual and use Oshawa MHA to be their voice with Ontario MHA.  To further facilitate we formed the Oshawa Hockey Development Committee with representatives from both HLs and Oshawa MHA Reps. All issues concerning Hockey at any level are brought to the table.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 10 Role of the Parents  If hockey association is to be successful these paying customers need to be satisfied.  How do you determine what the customers want and are they getting it?  Parent surveys to gather both feedback and suggestions.  Initial surveys generated good responses and keyed on several problem areas.  Discontinued when participation dropped below 40%.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 11 Role of the Players  If the objective is to develop skills and character players need to feel they belong and are a key part of a team.  We provide professional clinics for skills, skating and goalies.  We mandate and publicize rolling of the lines up to Peewee – equal # of shifts except for final minutes of a game.  Player surveys were also a good indicator of teams that needed intervention – players will tell you more than parents.  Coaches who shorten the bench too much are amazed the next season when players drop down to AA try outs

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 12 Role of the Coaches  They have more influence on how we are viewed than any other group.  Need to be open minded and prepared to develop knowledge and skills – we have dropped those who are not.  Need to view the players as their customers – keep them happy as a group not as individuals.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 13 Role of the Managers  Front line customer reps for executives and coaches – problem solver.  Monthly meetings to address current issues and avoid problems.  Standard form financial reporting every month to executive and parents – no free lancing.  No pay = no ice – no exceptions.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 14 Role of the Executives Role of the Executives  Leadership and setting standards for all.  Document and distribute manual of operations for all staff.  Be receptive to new ideas and provide balanced response to members proposals.  Work as a team and support each other.  COMMUNICATE – Parent Council and Website.

Oshawa Minor Hockey - NOHA Presentation 15 Role of the Mentors  Guide coaches in developing players and themselves.  Promote association wide systems for fore check, back check, face offs etc so players get consistent training.  Participate in monthly meetings to discuss issues and refine systems.
