Beyond World Youth Day

Past WYD Pilgrim Sarah Flook – WYD 2005

Outline What is ‘Beyond WYD’? Who will be impacted? Preparing for Post WYD Sustaining Structures Framework for Ministry with Young People Transitioning and Ongoing Support

What is ‘Beyond WYD’? July - September coming down from the peak experience / focusing the excitement and energy October - December creating new opportunities for young people and reintegration into community life January 09 and beyond sustaining an ongoing ministry program in your community

Who is the Audience’? WYD - Days in the Diocese Young People Host Families Leaders and Organisers Volunteers Communities WYD - Sydney Young People Leaders & Organisers Communities

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) 500,000 to 1 Within 24/48 hrs after the final mass at WYD young people will be home… –in their own homes –isolated from their pilgrimage group –back into normal routines

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) The Peak Experience Those having a peak experience will want … –to share their experience –to re-connect with those they experienced it with –more of it.

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) The Peak Experience Strategies to assist young people work through a peak experience include… –Realistic Expectations –Parent / Community Orientation –A Debrief Program –Ritual –Personal Contact Points –The Next Thing

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) Realistic Expectations –Have clear and broad expectations –Keep expectations of young people low, make the journey with them and invite them to service – do not demand it of them –World Youth Day is not training – it is a faith experience, it will not equip young people with skills to work in parish life. This is additional!

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) Parent / Community Orientation –What will their sons and daughters feel after WYD? –How can they connect and help debrief the experience? –Support young pilgrims by briefing their parents on what to expect after WYD.

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) Debrief –Organise for the young people to gather and share stories in small groups. Strategies include: –Spend time writing down the many experiences, feeling, thoughts from each day –Sharing a moment when they encountered God on the journey –Create a ritual which invites the community to acknowledge the past events but focuses them forward on their life and choices.

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) Ritual –As important as commissioning pilgrims, have a ritual or celebration welcoming young pilgrims back –Don’t just celebrate the week in Sydney, but the pilgrimage / journey taken over the past months/years –Invite young people to speak at the masses for 2,3,4 weeks after WYD to share experiences –Acknowledge the journey ahead

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) Personal Contact –Young people will have built up key relationships with leaders over the past 12 months – keep them open –distribute contact details for group leaders and other significant parish contact –Strategically contact participants to ‘check in’ and see how they are travelling – at gatherings, by phone, , etc

Preparing for Post WYD (July - Sep) The Next Big Thing –Have a clear path laid ahead – when is the next time we are getting together, what is our next big occasion/event –Keep promoting these opportunities

Sustaining Structures (July - Sep) Keep it Moving – Keep it Alive –In the preparation for World Youth Day communities have built up key resources and relationships for ministry with young people: –Pilgrimage, Spiritual and Pastoral leaders –WYD Champions and youth leaders –Days in the Diocese, Service and Outreach, and welcoming and inclusive coordinators –Volunteers and host families –Prayer, ritual and formation resources –Better relationships with community leaderships: Priests, Pastoral Council, teachers and APRE’s –Financial commitments and fundraising

Sustaining Structures Keep it Moving – Keep it Alive –Maintain relationships, support structures and volunteers and invite them to continue the journey with the community’s young people. –Strategies to assist communities include… –Evaluate/Debrief –Saying Thank You –Help Groups Mingle –Develop a Way Forward

Sustaining Structures Evaluate / Debrief –Take the time in separate committees and collectively as a community to share your experiences of planning, preparing, and participating in WYD – how can community initiatives work better in the future?

Sustaining Structures Saying Thank You –Be sure to thank those who have assisted in anyway during World Youth Day –A Personal ‘Thank you’ is the most valuable; seek out those who need thanking and take time and effort to make it meaningful –Hold a large mass or celebration acknowledging everyone in the community who help out with World Youth Day

Sustaining Structures Help Groups Mingle –Be sure your WYD Sydney Pilgrimage Group does not become a clique. –Be intentional about mixing up all the young people in the community – everyone’s experiences of WYD are valuable and worth sharing and reflecting on –Be sure to facilitate discussion for the first few meeting when everyone comes together.

Sustaining Sructures Develop a Way Forward –Gather leaders and volunteers to look at creating a ‘Parish Youth Ministry team’ – a team focused on the ongoing ministry with young people in your parish –Review your resources and opportunities for ongoing engagement for ministry with young people

Sustaining Structures Develop a Way Forward –Invite key adults and young people to come together and brainstorm about what they can do next – challenge those present about how they are personally going to be involved, contribute to making this a success –Be sure to offer a positive picture of the future, something worth being a part of.

Framework for Ministry with Young People INVITE: helping young people to Connect with the message of Jesus (evangelisation) FORM: helping young people to Grow in their knowledge and faith (catechesis) CHALLENGE : helping young people to Choose to respond to the call of the Gospel (life discernment) SEND: helping young people to Go out to others with a sense of purpose and mission (mission)

Framework for Ministry with Young People 9 Principles 1.A priority of the Archdiocese. 2.Grounded in the life experience of young people. 3.Integrated within the community. 4.Inclusive of all. 5.Part of an ongoing journey. 6.Aware of the needs of others. 7.Conducted to, with, for and by young people. 8.Supported by adults. 9.Occurs within a safe environment.
