Long-Term Objectives Implement Common Core State Standards ● Develop “Standards Fluency” ● Build content knowledge for depth of instruction ● Build pedagogical knowledge for depth of instruction ● Have resources for standards implementation ● Standards for Mathematical Practice are evident in classrooms

Today’s Objectives: ● Participants will develop fluency with the domain of Numbers and Operations in Base Ten. ● Participants will experience tasks and strategies to further background and content knowledge.

Norms ● Turn cell phones on vibrate and take any urgent calls outside. ● Keep computer screens at an angle when we are not using them. ● Feel free to use the restroom at your discretion. ● Let go of technology stress, hop on with a neighbor or follow along with presenter.

16+15

Create a Number Talk in groups Using your notes, the Number Talks book and “Tips for Implementing Number Talks” plan a Number Talk. Make sure you work in groups and be ready to present your Number Talk to a different group. (The other group will solve the problem)

13 Rules that Expire ● Read pg. 20 and the first paragraph of page 21. ● Browse through the rules and pick either 2, 4, 5,10 or 11. Grab that Post-it when you decide. ● Discuss with your team and make a poster that shows what the rule is and why it does not work. ● Be prepared to share out.

Math Progressions ●Read through the Progressions. ●Discuss the two paragraphs on the bottom of the first page. ●Post an “ah-ha” and be ready to share out.

Critical Area and Standards ●Read through the critical areas and standards for NBT. ●Discuss your thoughts. ●Post an “ah-ha” and be ready to share out.

Math Activity ●Complete the activities (do the math) ●In your groups compare and contrast the activities.

Performance Tasks ● Complete the two tasks (do the math) ● In your group discuss, compare and contrast the two tasks.

Content Building Activities ●At your tables you have math lab. Complete the lab and move to the other activity. ●Be prepared to share out if/how you would use these and their value, particularly in developing place value understanding. ●YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES WITH EACH LAB

Why do we need to teach place value well?

Planning

Wrap up/Eval ● Please complete the eval on Haiku. ● Please leave any questions on the Parking Lot or me.
