EXCITING, RIGHT? CITATIONS

USING QUOTES ALWAYS cite the author and page # (or line # for poetry). “Sucks to your ass-mar” (Golding 4). PLEASE NOTE: No comma between Golding and the page number Punctuation AFTER the citation When using one source, you can drop the author on all citations EXCEPT FOR the first

EMBEDDING QUOTES Simple sentence tag (Use of author/character name is preferred: Hawthorne implies…) Simon says, “Maybe there is a beast…maybe it’s only us” (Golding 47). Comma before quote Capitalize first word Period before end quote Use more precise terms for says: believes, maintains, suggests, implies (This is typical “dialogue” style and does NOT offer the “so what” analysis.)

EMBEDDING QUOTES Simon says that “maybe there is a beast…maybe it’s only us” (Golding 47). No comma before quote No cap for first word of quote No quotes if you change the line completely: He says that the boys are becoming the beast. (However, notice that this type of sentence does NOT offer the “so what” feature.)

EMBEDDING QUOTES The statement that “the world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away” indicates how Ralph sees the boys becoming savage (Golding 112). The line “After all, we’re not savages. We’re English” is ironic because Jack was the first to become savage on the island (Golding 16). *THESE embedded sentences offer the “so what” feature.

EMBEDDING QUOTES In the end, Ralph “wept for the end of innocence” when the Navy officer came to save them (Golding 194). No commas No capitalization

CREATING YOUR INTRO! Example: Edmund Burke once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph experiences what Burke said when the boys join Jack’s tribe. Ralph gives up, therefore letting evil triumph. Through the course of the novel, the darkness of mankind is allowed to flourish due to the weaknesses of the good characters.

SO WHAT DID I DO THERE? HOOK Edmund Burke once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph experiences what Burke said when the boys join Jack’s tribe. Ralph gives up, therefore letting evil triumph. Through the course of the novel, the darkness of mankind is allowed to flourish due to the weaknesses of the good characters. THESIS

WORKS CITED Please add a works cited at the end of your essay Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Example: Green, John. The Fault In Our Stars. New York: Dutton, Print.
