Fort Delaware By: Nick Miller

Fort Delaware is located on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River.

Fort Delaware was used to keep Wilmington and Philadelphia safe. They were worried about take overs after the War of They were afraid of the British.

To get to the fort you have to take a ferry because of its location. It was used as a jail for Confederate prisoners. It would be hard for them to escape being on an island.

Most of the prisoners were captured from the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War.

This is a picture inside of the fort. I went there and bought some Confederate and Union currency. Each state had their own money back then. (see visual)

They had canons to protect them from any attacks.

Here are the barracks where they lived. They lived in horrible, overcrowded conditions with no mattresses. They were in wooden bunks three levels high!

Many people died of starvation or diseases at Fort Delaware.

This is a tombstone for 2,456 Confederate prisoners that died at Fort Delaware.

There are many ghost tales about Ft. Delaware. This is a book about ghosts at Fort Delaware. I have an autographed copy of this book from the author. (see visual)

One tale is that the kitchen is haunted by a ghost. Witnesses say the women disappeared into the wall. There is a cold spot in this spot where she disappeared. There is also a picture in my book someone took a picture of the cold spot. (see visual)

Today you can visit Fort Delaware and see how it was to live back then. They have re-enactors there pretending it is in the 1800’s.
