Today’s Agenda Understand the history and development of Washington State’s new Teacher and Principal Evaluation System Understand the rigorous components of the new system with the focus on student learning outcomes and improved professional practice Clarify BSD’s stance on upcoming Legislative action related to TPEP 2

Historical Description TPEP originated during the 2010 legislative session. Changed from a two-tiered system of satisfactory or unsatisfactory to a four-tier rating system Created eight new criteria for teachers and principals to be evaluated upon 22 components and 3 student growth measures for teachers 25 components and 3 student growth measures for principals Common themes tying the criteria for teachers and principals together Yearly revisions to the process by the legislature have made implementation challenging 3

Core principles of TPEP Quality teaching and leading is critically important Professional learning is a key component of an effective evaluation system Teaching and leading is work done by a core team of professionals Teacher and principal evaluation models should co-exist within the complex relationship between district systems and negotiations 4
