Our Agenda Tonight The Case for Goals 12 Step Goal Process Key Take-Aways 3 Goal Method Exercise

The Case for Goals! Start with the end in mind Why is It important to have clear well defined goals? Road maps and road signs. Who we will become is yet to be determined. The path to achievement is paved with goals. Start with the end in mind – Stephen Covey

Why Goals? Goals – the key to happiness Why people don’t set goals Join the top 3% Success is goals – all else is commentary Happiness is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal or goal. – Earl Nightingale

Which Group are you in? Success is goals – all else is commentary 3% Written Goals 84% No Written or verbal goals or plans 13% Verbal Goals Success is goals – all else is commentary

The Power of Goals! ASSUMPTIONS 100 STUDENTS IN THE CLASS 84% EARNED $100,000 PER YEAR The power of this case study is so strong that I couldn’t resist re-stating it in a numerical example (it must be the engineer in me) First off, the numbers have been normalized to simplify the math and the presentation – we are using 100 students and an average salary of $100,000 for the “bottom “ 84%

The Power of Goals! # ANNUAL COMBINED PAY PAY 84 $100,000 $8,400,000 13 $200,000 $2,600,000 97 $11,000,000

3 $110,000,000 The Power of Goals! # ANNUAL PAY 3 $110,000,000 The 3% of the class who had clear written goals at the time of graduation, was earning a combined total $110M

7 Categories of Goals Business/Career Financial Family Personal Health Spiritual Charitable

The Goal Setting Strategy IMAGINE…… EXPAND…… CLARIFY…… ANALYZE….. EVALUATE…… PRIORITIZE…… COMMIT!!!!!!!   There is of course a strategy to setting goals. First we must dream about what the goal is, and then we go through a number of steps to make it a reality. We first Imagine the goal Then expand our vision of it Clarify what exactly it is that we want Analyze what it will take to get it Evaluate the possible paths and activities required Prioritize the activities required And then, commit to taking those actions!

The 12 Step Goal Method

Step 1 - Decide Decide exactly what you want in 7 key areas of your life – Business/Career Financial Family Personal Health Spiritual Charitable Start off by idealizing No limitations I am going to share with you the 12 step method for setting and achieving goals First off, decide what you want in each of the 7 categories – be very free and open with your thoughts and don’t limit yourself in any way

Step 2 – Set SMART Goals Specific Measurable Aligned Realistic Time-bound

Step 3 – Using the 3 P’s Write goals in the personal tense….start every goal off with “I” After each “I” use an action verb… “I have” “I earn” Write goals in the present tense as if you have already achieved them. Write goals in a positive tense….I will quit smoking….to…..I am a non smoker! Step 3 is using the 3 Ps in describing you goals Personal Tense such as I have or I earn a certain amount of money Present tense – as if you already achieved the goal – if it is your goal to earn $100,000, then describe yourself as I am a $100,000 earner Positive tense – so instead of saying I will stop smoking – say instead – I am a non smoker

Step 4 – Set Deadlines Set definite deadlines…Short term and long term No unreasonable goals, just unreasonable deadlines Subconscious mind uses deadlines as a forcing method

Step 5 – Identify Your Obstacles Identify obstacles that you have to overcome to achieve your goals Theory of Constraint: There is always one limiting factor from keeping you from making your goals 80-20….Fully 80% of all obstacles are on the inside of you. Only 20% are on the outside Identify your Obstacles We know that the theory of constraints tells us that there is one limiting factor that is keeping us from our goals – find it , fix it and then move on to the next factor Also know that fully 80% of the obstacles keeping us from our goals are internal – our own insecurities or lack of specific skills or plans.

Step 6 – Knowledge and Skills Needed Identify the knowledge information and skills you’ll need to achieve your goals. Your weaker key skill sets the height of your income and success! Work and focus on that one key skill What one skill if developed in an excellent fashion would help me the most to double my income?

Step 7 – Identify the help You’ll Need Identify the people whose help and cooperation you’ll need to achieve your goals Understand what’s in it for them Be a go Giver rather than a Go Getter… You must have the help and support of others to get where you want to go! You must build and maintain a network of people and friends Identify the people whose help and cooperation you will need. What can you do to help them with their goals? Make it habit to “pay it forward” so that others will want to help you achieve your goals

Step 8 – Make A Plan Have a GOAL & a PLAN….Return on Equity is worth a 1000% return on your expenditure of time. Think on Paper Use Time Management Lay out your week every Sunday Plan each day the evening before Each minute spent in planning saves 10 minutes in execution EVERYTHING IS HARD BEFORE IT’S EASY

Step 9 – Select Your # 1 Goal Select your #1 most important task for each day. If I could do just one thing on this list, which one would be the most valuable use of my time…..second, third…. If I could do just one thing all day long which one activity would get me closer to my goals. The most highly paid job we can ever do is THINKING…..FOCUS & Concentration This very act will increase your productivity by over 50% the first day. When you have identified your #1 most important task, stick with it until it is complete. If you do just one thing all day long, which activity would get you closer to your goal? Thinking, is the one thing that can generate the highest paid returns of anything we do.

Step 10 – Develop Self Discipline Develop the habit of SELF DISCIPLINE Resolve to concentrate on this one task without wavering until it’s done. You avoid all distraction You create a habit Practice visualization on your Goals! See the goals as if it was already achieved. Write the goals as if they were already achieved

Step 11 - Decide on you major definite purpose. If I could wave a magic wand and achieve any goal on this list in 24 hours which one goal will have the greatest impact on my life. Take this one goal and write it down on a clean piece of paper Set deadlines Obstacles Skills to improve or learn Everything you’ll have to do to achieve it Organize by sequence and priority Make a plan Work on it daily If You could wave a magic wand and achieve any goal on your list in 24 hours, which one goal will have the greatest impact on your life? Take this one goal and write it down on a clean piece of paper Set deadlines Identify the Obstacles Specify the Skills to improve or learn List Everything you’ll have to do to achieve it Organize by sequence and priority Make a plan Work on it daily

Step 12 – Review Your Goals ........ ......... Everyday WRITE OUT EVERY GOAL and READ IT EVERY MORNING and EVERY EVENING BEFORE BEDTIME!

Key “Take-Aways” WITHOUT GOALS… EVERYTHING IS JUST ACTIVITY . WISHING IS NOT A MANAGEMENT STRATEGY. THE PROCESS OF GOAL SETTING AND ATTAINMENT IS REALLY JUST COMMON SENSE… IN PRACTICE.

Key “Take-Aways” 4. ONLY YOU CAN BUILD YOUR GOALS – YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR CAREER ARE ALWAYS PERSONAL. 5 FIRST YOU MAKE YOUR HABITS, THEN YOUR HABITS MAKE YOU…

Key “Take-Aways” 6. YOU TOO CAN, WITH PRACTICE, DEVELOP THE HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE… ALL GOALS MUST BE WRITTEN, TIME-CONSTRAINED AND MEASURABLE.

Key “Take-Aways” 8. FULLY 80% OF THE REASONS THAT ARE HOLDING YOU BACK ARE INSIDE YOURSELF. 9. RESOLVE TO BECOME A TOP 10% PERFORMER. 10. PAY IT FORWARD…BECOME A “GO GIVER.”

Key “Take-Aways” 11. THINK ON PAPER, YOUR DAILY WRITTEN PLAN IS KEY. 12. YOU BECOME… YOU GO IN THE DIRECTION OF… WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT MOST OF THE TIME… 13. CONTINUALLY ASK YOURSELF… “WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I SHOULD BE DOING RIGHT NOW ???”

Key “Take-Aways” 14. BE DISCIPLINED. MAKE GOAL SETTING A DAILY HABIT

Goal Setting Exercise Whatever goals you wrote using this “Three Goal Method” is probably an accurate picture of what you really want in life.

The Power of Goals

The Power of Goals “It’s not the will to win that counts. Virtually everybody wants to be a winner. It’s the will to prepare to win that makes champions.” --Paul “Bear” Bryant
